Afternoon All,
After having 6 bikes stolen from my garage (worth approx £5500.00 in total)recently i reported it to the police (who didnt come out) and then I put in the insurance claim. Last week they sent out a cost adjuster to go through the claim.
Today the insurance chaps have phoned again for a second cost adjuster to come out. Is this normal? This is my first insurance claim and im not sure of the procedures.
Has anybody else had experience of this?
Cheers
Make sure all your locks (doors & windows) comply with the wording of your insurance. If one door or window doesn't comply (even if not point of entry) then they can throw out claim.
It's probably because of the high cumulative value of the loss. They'll be looking for absolutely every little thing they can to knock money off your final awarded sum, from the obvious depreciation factor(unless you have a 'new for old' policy?) to perceived or implied flaws in security - ie trying to make out the theft was partly your own fault for having nice bikes in the first place, being seen on them/loading them in and out of your car etc by passing scumbags and not storing them in an apocalypse-proof underground bunker which is in turn guarded by a pack of particularly antisocial Tyrannosaurus' Rex.
It seems things are tighter in the current climate - had a claim on my wife's stolen bike recently (less than a grand) and it felt like a telephone interview leaving no stone unturned. Some really lame, insinuating questions as well.
Had a 3 grand bike stolen 5 or 6 years back and it was nodded through nae bother.
If one door or window doesn't comply (even if not point of entry) then they can throw out claim.
Even if it had nothing to do with the theft?
Unlikely, there's some scare mongering going on here.
I'd be a bit hacked off with that though if it were me and I had to take a 2nd day off work to meet with them. £5k isnt high in the scale of insurance claims. Presumably you got a crime number even if you didnt get a police visit?
I've made 3 similar to yours, had an assessor out once. they were mainly there to price up the damage to the property, as there were clearly no bikes left to examine.
Dont worry about it (unless your claim is obviously dodgy) but dont just roll over either. You've been paying premiums so you shouldnt feel bad about claiming. But probably best to keep them sweet in the long term!
Yes as you've not met your requirements under the contract so they'll say the contract is invalid, or something to that effect.
Yep i got a crime number when i reported it.
The policy is old for new so depriciation shouldnt really come into it. I went through the parts on 3 of the bikes that got stolen as I built them up myself. I was also trying to explain to the cost adjuster that you can not buy a Cotic from Evans or any other main dealer etc. It looks like ive got to go through the whole thing again.
The sticking point being that i no longer have receipts for alot of the parts. I do have pictures of all of them and with me on the bikes at events etc.

Loss adjusters are barstards theyre bonused on the amount they can save the Ins Co,so they look for any loop hole they can,we were burgled @ work, the claim was for £25k,they paid me just under 10,ive no chance of getting the other 15,due to the wriggling!,so be careful, worst thing is,i thought they were going to be fine,i 100% never claimed for a dime more than was missing,in actual fact i under claimed! ,thats what honesty gets you..... Bugger all !.
FYI you are entitled to appoint your own loss adjusters to deal with your insurance co, in this case it may not be of sufficient value to make it financially worthwhile, if your interested google some up and give them a call they can only say no....
