Just a moan about being sick of breaking stuff and not really getting ahead with my bike. Bust an slx rear mech and chain last week after it had been on the bike for a fortnight and now the chainsets getting changed out. I know its all part of the fun but Im finding it really tedious. Moan over.
How olds the chainset ?
And why change the chainset, surely your just changing the rings?

That's way it goes sometimes. I find that things all seem to break/wear out/go wrong at the same time. I'm going through a good patch at the moment though no doubt it'll change now...
Nah mate. I know what Im doing with bikes and have a good relationship with the repair shop(surprisingly enough) so Im not being ripped off. Pedal thread on the driveside on the chainset ended up stripped and not rethreadable so the whole thing needs changed. Bollox. Rear mech was beyond recognition never mind repair! Not fit enough for ss and it wouldnt suit my riding either.

Pedal not being done up tight enough? No other way for it to happen unless the thread was ripped clean out, which would probably destroy the pedal as well as the crank.
OP: What happened to the chain and mech? Crash damage?

Well those are the only two ways I can think of - He said he was a competent mechanic so I was hoping it was the former though I've never seen that happen - bent axles/cranks/BBs but not trashed threads.

Yeah found it strange as well. Think the pedal was in ok and Id ridden it for two years no prob. Crashed at Inners which knacked the rear mech and chain and then 2 days later the pedal was wobbly and when I looked at it the thread was ok but then it would only screw in so far and then not tighten fully. Had the shop look and couldnt be rethreaded. I know they can be heliocoiled but just bought an old xtr chainset instead.
Dont think a course would hurt either wors but its more about me pushing myself at riding dh! Im in a bit of a learning curve just now..... Only really been riding dh for about 2years so Im sort of picking up speed now. No one to blame apart from myself! Im a dainty wee waif of a thing as well - 17stone and 6 ft 4! Doesnt do components any favours. It is down to a lack of skill though Im not fooling myself.

At 17 stone and doing downhill is it really that sensible to be buying xtr cranks? Surely Saint is where your money should be going.
Too expensive mate! My thinking is to buy decent s/h stuff till I stop wrecking things/pick up skill then when I get a bit better get some decent kit.
i have an XTR rear mech that's been on the bike 5 years now, taken some big hits (not from jumping) ๐ณ cannont recomend them enough
had a big crash at stiles cop last year and landed on the brake leaver all it did was dug into the ground - got to love those Hope's....had those for around 4 years as well and no damange
having said that i have been through 2 frames and countless innertubes
chains and cassettes tend to last a year or 2 only i think because of the heavy usage and stresses
i have learned IMO that you get what you pay for when it comes to MTB'ing

My rear mech is 10yrs old (looks like this)
and I always buy the heaviest and most basic cassette and chain. My current base-Shimano chain is so light now that I bet its as light as a top end chain.
Another thing- after every ride do you take your chain off, clean and leave to soak in oil?

I ride in gritty/nasty powdering sand-type areas in the Peaks and its grippy to ride but evil when mixed with water. Not so long ago I had to use a flat-headed screwdriver to remove dried deposits on my jockey wheels.
Yes- it definitely makes a difference. It makes your chain last longer IMO. Its not hard either- just use a powerlink, snaked off and soak, clean.
The rest of the bike (apart from stanchions) can just be left filthy IMO.
