I've just done my usual 1 hour road loop, but rode it on the Cotic solaris.

Strava says there's no difference between the road bike and the MTB.

Does this mean I'm set up all wrong on the road bike? Shouldn't there be a clear difference in times between the two bike?

theories please...

You didn't pedal hard enough on the road bike? Did you go hard on both or just cruise?

You either went very slowly on the road bike or very quickly on the mtb

yeah, need more info. what tyres are you running

I have a solaris (not that the bike really matters) and I find my proper tyres really draggy on the road

Headwind? Long Day? Did the road bike have a flat tyre? Were you mashing it in a silly gear?

If you have a nice mountain bike with slick tyres and a rubbish road bike I can believe that.

A few years back I got a Specialized Allez road bike (basic model with heavy wheels) and was disappointed to find that I struggled to beat times I had set on my Kona Explosif scandium with slick tyres. Wasn't too gutted when the Allez got nicked a few months later.

Distance covered, elevation, profile are what matters, not just time. That and spec of the bikes.

hmmm...

more facts.

mtb -knobbly tyres (pumped up to 40psi for today)  but off-road gearing allows spinning

road bike -25mm GP4000, but standard crankset rather than modern compact means lower leg rpm

Nah, what matters.. is whether you enjoyed yourself 🙂

Clearly you were adhering to the 20mph speed limit on both bikes.

Headwind

Leg freshness

Not using drops enough to get aero benefit on road bike

Clothing (both aero benefits and ability to lose heat if pushing hard)

Less dense air in this heatwave

etc.

Definitely wind would have an effect as would temperature, I'm normally about 21 mins on a road bike for a lap of RP but MTB would struggle to do 25. RP is awash with starva segments have you broken down your time for the hills and perhaps the segment from Roehampton Gate to Richmond gate?

No real surprise, over that time there won't tend to be a significant difference...make that 3+ hours and it would be a much bigger gap...

Were you using the Strava app on your phone by any chance?, if so, it's not very accurate sometimes.

I'd have a crack at it on both bikes again just out of pure curiosity, obviously trying to ride both times in similar conditions, be interesting to see if you come up with the same sort of times/effort put in again.

thanks for the ideas people.

To make it a fair comparison I should take the road bike for a rattle around surrey hills/swinley etc.  😉

I noticed this when I first moved back to my summer road bike having been riding my winter singlespeed.

Obviously winter bike was heavier and with fatter tyres, less aero (mudguards) and had no gears. First rides on the road bike were weird, it *felt* fast, but I could see from my speeds I was going slower, plus I was definitely slower on the climbs.

I realised it was just because my pacing was wrong, my gear selection was wrong, etc. Getting used to a lighter bike with gears actually took a few rides. Now it's faster than the winter bike without even trying.

Traffic Conditions? Did you spend more time drafting on the MTB?

I do it all the time. Today a roadie came past me just after I came off a trail onto the road, he pulled about 70m gap on me, then I thought, I'm having that, over the next 800m I caught him and sat on his wheel until he turned off about a minute later

Roadies, pansies the lot of them!

Wind levels, and perhaps it's faster to spin? I'm sure your road bike has low enough gears to do so around rp.

Fwiw my ht is pretty close to my commuter now it's got summer tyres on.

Was it a fat lad on a boardman = Not a proper roadie.

over here it’s the old boys on steel tourers you have to watch out for.

They hit 20mph and just sit at the speed for hours, probably days on end regardless of weather conditions, hills, traffic etc.

they absolutely amaze me.

Given the amount of pot holes I'd expect a mountain bike to be quicker on some roads.

Agree about the old dudes. I went out on a beginner's level club ride just over a year aho, this guy spent most of the ride just crusing along. We get to box hill and he just sails past me, 20 year old steel tourer, both panniers (albeit empty) still on the back. Chatting to him at the café later it turns out he does 3-4 rides a week as he has nothing else to do!

A 25 minute lap equates to 16mph - once you try to hold an average of 20mph, road bike benefits of drop bars, position/aerodynamics and lower rolling resistant really come into play
