I've been thinking about a lighter-weight Kona Sutra replacement for some time and this is what I've come up with. It'll be used for commuting, touring and perhaps an occasional audax.
It's been a while in the planning and acquisition stages, seemingly even longer in build. Finally completed today and will be ridden tomorrow.
Oh - 9.6Kg if anyone is interested. It'll be a lot heavier once the rack and mudguards go on it too ๐
I cannot believe you stood there in front of me today and refused to put green bar tape on.
And to think you had the audacity to tell me today I couldn't buy any more bikes!
Looks nice

P35s should be wide enough for those tyres.
whats with the disks ?
oh and im using a netbook with a 7inch screen here so i might be wrong but it looks like you left the set up sticker on your front mech ๐
thats what we call a 'noob tag' trail_rat
you would think he would know better.
i think there may be 2 more on the rotors...

It's a cross bike trying to pretend it's a road bike, or at least I think it is..
chainrings look a touch on the big side for a cross bike though & too small for a proper road bike
Noob
Nice bike mister
Not a cross bike.
Light tourer.
It is actually tidy.
Light tourer? How can it be a tourer without racks? or even guards?

i refer you to the OP
haha, oh yeah, that'll teach me not to read it properly ๐

They are part of the brake mechanism. These are used to slow down and stop the velocipede. Don't worry, hang about a bit longer and you'll learn lots of new stuff.

And the disc ones. You've no idea how much that winds some folk up ๐

Standard "compact" cranks - 50/34. It's as much as my little legs can manage up those mountain passes we have in scotchland.
Looks good, not too sure about the amount of blue on the stickers though...
we have mountains in scotchland ? can you take me there ๐
you coming audaxing this year then ? deeside loop the week after 10 UTB from kirrie - then there are 2 from portmahumock up north - 300 sat 200 sunday then snow roads 300 and a 600 from down your way !
I'd like that with discs for commuting. Smart.
I wouldn't take photos of it though, but that's just me.
Stick some smaller wheels on it, knobbly tyres, riser bars, suspension forks and with a few other minor tweaks, it may almost start to resemble a decent bike.....
If your looking for your swimming goggles there on your sideboard, & why have you got a penis in a vase on the sideboard. Abit retro looking that bike IMO, nice all the same.
It all wrong. Tut tut tut. Wrong size wheels, funny handlebars silly gearing.
Its all going wrong at TBC nowadays
Pipe down TJ or lose your discount level FOREVER!!!
I'm sure it works extremely well, but aesthetically, I find myself ...er... struggling to appreciate it's undoubted inner beauty.
trail_rat - Memberyou coming audaxing this year then ?
That's the intent...
rangers supporter innit
Green bar tape make you go faster FACTOMUNDO (the endura team have green handlebar tape and they are faster than you so yes it's a FACTOMUNDO)
Ok - its all going wrong at TBC since that grumpy old man with teh odd taste in roadbikes started there.
Whereas mark is a fine upstanding young man of extreme gnar and buffness
That looks really nice. I've been looking for a commuter that will run discs and have mounts for rack and guards. Tell me more about the frame and forks!
We've got the exact same IKEA unit...

Frame is a Van Nicholas Amazon. I wanted something in titanium, with disc mounts and the Amazon was easily the most affordable option. I looked at getting the Enigma guys to accessorise one of their frames but ruled it out on cost grounds.
The fork is the Kinesis DC-19. I wanted carbon and disc mounts. This was the "cleanest" looking and again was an affordable option.
The rest of the build is...
Ultegra groupset
Avid BB7s
Mavic Open Pros on XTR hubs with XTR rotors
Conti Grand Prix 4 seasons
Hope headset and seatclamp
Ritchey EA70 stem and EC70 bars
Lizard Skins DSP bar tape
Crank Brothers Candy SL pedals
Specialized Pave seatpost and Avatar saddle (from the Sutra)
The Sutra is now for sale - as is a set of Ultegra calipers

I seriously thought about it!
Just been having a look online. 132.5mm rear end spacing. How tidy do the stays look without the canti studs in place?
That looks very much like you could get some decent sized tyres in there, what is clearance like on the chainstays?
FFS! - hang on a mo.....
deary me ๐ฟ
Oooh, I like that.
300 sat 200 sunday then snow roads 300 and a 600 from down your way !
Please tell me those numbers aren't in miles!
I knew audax was madness, but that distance on tarmac would take numb b0ll0x to a new dimension.
I've got the same forks and they've been great. Actually, I've a similar utility bike, except based on an old On One Ti CX frame, with cheaper/heavier parts - dependable!
Boxelder - I reckon audax is a whole new world of madness!
in kms ...
kicks off with 10 UTB and then the following weekends are minimum 200k till mid june .... its my equivalent of winter training for a late season !
Shame I have the Etape Caledonia the same weekend as 10UTB. I have another couple of Sportives I'm hoping to get to too. Is there a handy calendar of the Audax events, and do I have to register for them early or is it more a question of just turning up on the day?

Druidh - I emailed you but then I did a 12 month advanced search and found this.
How about an update now it's nearly a year on. Give us a review if you would be so kind...,
Ah bollocks - found your email, sorry.
You should be pretty clear on the tyre width question now? Basically, massive clearance in there as the photo earlier in the thread shows.
Audax (and various other things) didn't happen due to family issues. However, I did get out on a couple of wee road tours and the bike has been used 2/3 days every week for a 10 mile (each way) commute.
So far, the only changes I've made were to dump the Compact for a Triple (hey - I'm old and appreciate it when it's loaded up a bit) and recently stuck on a Brooks B17, which has been great.
The bike itself has given me no issues. Once it's moving it rolls along very predictably, even with panniers etc. The forks look a bit skinny, but haven't throw up any issues. I've yet to load it up completely (tent etc) that will come this year - however, I'm not expecting any problems.
Being Ti, it has survived the year unscathed, road salt etc just isn't an issue. The graphics on the Top Tube have started to flake off a bit where my thighs are touching them if I'm standing astride the bike. I'm not too fussed about the graphics anyway and might just remove them (nail varnish remover works a treat).
It's noticeably slower than my carbon road bike (currently a Focus Cayo which will soon be for sale), though I've yet to try it with a thinner 23/25mm tyre. I'm also thinking of getting something wider and knobby on it and trying some light off-roading. VN do a CX version of the Amazon but it does have slightly different geometry (including a steeper head tube).
If there's anything else specific you'd like to know, ask away.
Cool, cheers for the write up.
Yep the tyre clearance looks huge and just what I'm after, found a few frames with great clearance round the seat stay but not round the bottom bracket area.
Def looking for a comfy ride hence the 35c tyres (although I was surprised how fast marathon supremes are for their size) so if it's a little bit slower than a carbon superbike that's fine).
You wouldn't happen to know the bb height would you?
I've just built up a steel tourer with discs and although it's lovely to ride, I just can't get over the 26lb end weight of the built. With Ti frame and carbon forks I'm hoping to get the same comfy, stable and sublime ride but drop some of the lard.
What size frame do you have compared to your height? The geometry sheet seems to suggest they are 'compact' sized so I was thinking of a 58cm as I'm 6'1 in height.
Cheers again.
Oh...nearly forgot. Are there any chainline/chainring clearance issues with a normal road external bb chainset due to the huge tyre clearances
Ground to BB centre on mine (28mm tyres) is 27.5cm.
I'm 5'7" and have a size 54.
Dunno what total weight is. It's a LOT lighter than the Kona Sutra it replaced though, that was over 30lbs ready to roll ๐ I can't imagine you are gonna drop lots of weight from the overall bike with just a frame change.
Rack-wise, I've looked at a few options - including Tubus. By far the simplest is to get the Topeak Super Tourist DX. The widely spaced bottom fittings avoid any interference with the disk caliper, even if it looks a little "ungainly" when bereft of panniers.
No chainline issues whatsoever.
