After driving under a stone arch way with my bike on the roof some minor repairs were in order (frame, front wheel, front fork, roof rack, car roof!) I bought the reserve 28 wheels in the Merlin sale, which come with indicated nine hubs, also bought a Sid SL fork.
Irritatingly the wheels come supplied without any 31mm torque caps needed to fit the SID fork, Merlin could sell me any, so I tracked some down online.
Now that they have arrived the external splines lock ring won’t clear the torque cap, and there is no way of fitting the lock ring first then pushing the end cap in.
What am I missing? Are there any external splines locking which will clear the 31mm torque caps?
On a positive note Santa’s Cruz UK support was excellent and they ordered me an accidental damage replacement frame for about 1/3rd RRP after my idiotic moment.
Pretty sure you can run a hub without torque caps and just use standard 15mm end caps on Rockshox forks, the wheel will be a bit more fiddly to fit but it will work just fine without torque caps fitted
Yeah, I think you can run the forks with normal hubs but not the hubs with normal forks?

This. It’s a very slight inconvenience seating the wheel/axle in the dropouts, but still fits.
Ok thanks that would be a whole lot easier, sounds like I didn’t need the £25 ends caps then!
You don't 'need' torque caps to run the hub in a Rockshox.
It’s a very slight inconvenience seating the wheel/axle in the dropouts, but still fits.
If you buy a proper aftermarket rockshox they also come with some little horseshoe shaped parts to fit to the dropouts which stops your non torque cap hub from flopping around and being awkward to poke the axle through.
You can make the above for forks those don't fit from plastic washers of the correct size.
What am I missing?
That torque caps have been and gone. You don’t need them. Forget about them.
I have torque cap end caps sitting in the spares box… I assume they’ll never get used again.
These look like a ring that could be bolted to any 15mm adapter to gives the extra flange;
Or these stick on bits for the lowers that predate the official kit (this is what I have made from washers*)
* Credit goes to another stw poster in the distant past
I’d wondered why it was a slight faff seating my front wheel into my Lyriks until I looked and saw the dropout was of wider diameter than the hub end caps. Seems these were designed for wider flanges but don’t need them.
