Hub seals. Proprietary or standard stuff?

[#13535758]

Was cleaning my new-to-me bike last week and found the rear wheel is rough as a badgers butt.

It seems a bolt that holds the casette together has come adrift, and mangled the seal between the freehub body and the hub shell. The bearings are also cooked, but this cant be have helped

The manafacturer was able to tell me the bearing sizes before i pulled the hub appart, but the seal is not available as a spare part.

£70 for a new freehub body, to get the £2 seal replaced.

doublt annoying, id already bought the bearings

Question is, whats the liklihood of getting a freehub seal from a generic supplier? or do they have these parts manafactured per hub?

From my limited knowledge, it appears to be a double lip seal, steel core, nitrile rubber.

calipers are coming out to measure it up.

any tips or suggestions? waste of time?

update. Theres tiny tiny text on it, G1707W, which leads me to this kit.  image.png

which appears to have the correct seal (the big one) with the text visible.

Also, this kit:

visibly looks to be the same, and also includes the big flat seal from the other end of the freehub. (mine are Hunt EnduroWideV2s)

which suggests this might be a hub sold under many names. Lovely.

Hunt don't make hubs, so yes, they'll be other brands using that freehub. I'm surprised some useful bike nerd hasn't made a catalogue of all these rebranded hubs, to help people find spares.

Someone on weightweenies started about 10 years ago. Haven't heard another thing about it. Think the problem is no one likes to talk about where they are buying their hubs from, especially once they are marking them up 50-100%!

annoyingly i think looking closely at the stans kit, its a single lip seal, rather than the double on this hub. The Reynolds kit in the image contains the seal, as you can read it on the picture, but the other parts dont look relevant.

That image takes me to a "no, because tarriffs" page, which is very irritating.

I guess different arrangements use different seals in different places, and mix and match the options.

It's the reason my default rear hub is Hope. Just took delivery last week of a freehub seal for my 19 year old Pro 2. Easy. Even determining what I needed to future proof a 2019 Mavic rear hub a couple of months ago was a mission by comparison.

agree entirely. Ive got hopes on everything else, with a wide variety of ages. (Mostly getting old now)

Swapping the hub out for a modern Hope hub had crossed my mind, seems excessive for a seal, at this stage. One day i might though, if these Hunt ones dont hold up.
