I'm on holiday for a couple of weeks and would love to hire a bike to explore a bit. But how on earth do you plan without good mapping? Last time I went I had a guide but don't fancy that this time - i'd just like to determine my own route
Point to point, google directions.
Strava or Garmin heat maps for loops/ busy spots
Mountain biking or road biking?
The latter is a LOT easier!
My first port of call would be Strava to figure out the heatmaps, then find some segments which on the most popular routes, then have a look at some rides via the Leaderboards (just to see whether there's consistent loops "most" people do)
Once I got a feel for the best locations, I'd then use Komoot to see whether it brings up any recommended routes.
I'd also check whether any local bike shops or bike clubs or tourist info have websites with recommended routes (pref with GPX files)
Then there's just Googling.
If that gets me nowhere, I'd check Ride With GPS or All Trails and maybe local Facebook groups
(And yes, I do this a lot, but not on Crete!)
