I love going over jumps/drops out on the trails or bike parks and am fairly confident in the air. I want to try to whip my bike like all the pro's do but have no idea where to start - any tips?
Push the back round with your rear leg, twist your hips with the bike, and look towards where you expect the back wheel to be turning the bars the same way.
Straighten up by looking back ahead (not the landing, that'll make you nose dive).
I find it hard to stay straight in the air so maybe not the best person to ask for technique!
find a nice long jump, with a really nice long take off, and nice wide landing.
get confident with it, then starting doing a left-right movement with the bars (in the air), the back end of the bike will move out to the left.
it's not a perfect moto-whip, but it's a good start.
(or, right-left, to make the rear wheel move the right)
spend a day or 2 doing nothing but this, and you'll get it.
I'd love to be able to do this.
Sadly the biggest jump I do is off a kerb and opportunities for tail whips are thus somewhat limited ๐
I did a 'micro whip bunnyhop' jumping a Coke can once. ๐ฏ
On a similar vein, can someone help me with a similar technique problem.
I can bunnyhop and land at 90deg (or jump and whip pretty far). But however hard I try I can't go any further and either 180 or 360?
Any tips?
I'd rather learn it as a bunnyhop then try it on a jump so i'm no so pressed for time in the air!
180 bunnyhops are reasonably easy, start to spin before you've lifted the rear wheel. and just keep looking round.
you just need to try harder to get further round, I tend to get all squint after 270 hopping and 180 jumping.
right foot forward is easier anticlockwise and vice versa.
for whips there are a number of ways, just looking at your back wheel is the lamest type, turning in and pushing out with your legs/hips is the best IMO. just remember if you are whipping out really far you'll need to land front wheel first to pull it back in enough
To 180 turn slightly alley oop 1st too

You need to start turning before you hop, at about 45 degrees you'll start pulling up and then at about 90 you'll be hopping and looking over your shoulder to complete the 180. This should be one smooth motion. 360's are possible on a bmx but you need to hop higher and snap round harder. Cant do em on my mtb though.
I also do those shitty Indian Giver things when I fakie out of a 180, they look all wrong.
I find whips easier on jumps that are steepish with not much of a gap, probably because it feels a bit like riding a vol/spine on a bmx. Im not sure whether my whips are proper or not anymore
180 bunny hops easier if tried on a slight up slope.

I'm equaly shonky on both :s they are both quite long though and weigh the same (30lb, 21.7" TT BMX, 18" 456)
My bmx is 21.4 but its not too bad. I dont really like doing em on my mtb cos the wheels and forks feel all flexy and horrid compared to the bmx.
This is one of the reasons i dont run some super slammed low bars like you, makes hops n that easier with a slightly higher front end (i find anyway)
