Going to seem like a strange question but Im heading down to Wales from Scotland soon and was going to hire a bike but figured as there are only 2 of us in a big car I may as well just take the wheels of and stick the frame and wheels in the boot. Only downside I can see is that It will sit on the back derailer probably bending it If I do . Dont get me wrong I have roof bars and rack but for fuel consumption and security feel this is the better way to transport it. So for guys that regularly throw there bike in the boot how do you do it without it sitting on the gears.?

Small cushion under the rear mech. Never had a problem.

2 of you in a big car?
Sorry, don't see the problem. Bikes should go in easy.

fold rear seats down if possible, means you can get 2 frames in horizontally easily, then wheels on top with sheet or something between to stop scratching. then stuff can go around bikes.

2 in a big car? fold the back seats down and you will easily get the bike in with just the front wheel off, you may not need t take any wheels off at all

I take pedals off (for long distance), wheels off, bikes laid flat in the back of a Seat Leon. Plenty of space for 2 people, 2 bikes and a week's luggage. Pedals off makes it easier to fit them in, without digging a hole in the boot floor. Also grabbed a load of really cheap fleecy blankets to line floor (catches all the dirt), and to stick between frames to avoid scratching.

Yeah, once had 3 people, 3 bikes and weeks worth of kit in the back of a Corsa, so no real issues. My bikes only ever travel in the boot, I can't imagine hanging them on the back of the car. I just chuck a rug down to catch the dirt and put the wheels under the frame to hold the mech off the floor. If I've got more than one bike I put the wheels between the two frames to hold them away from each other. I also usually bungee over them to the hooks on the boot floor to stop them shifting around in the corners if I'm going long distance.

Crikey...a big car, 2 people and you are asking how to pack a bike into the boot?

Like the old addage goes - it isn't rocket science - remove the wheels and put the seats down flat (and use some sheets)...bike goes in on it's side, luggage goes in around it (which will also help secure the bike), and wheels then go on top. Bent mech? That would be down to how you pack the car and how much movement you let the bike frame have - if it's properly packed then it can sit on the mech (if you insist on keeping it upright) all day as long as it is supported either side so it doesn't hvae the chance to move.

What kind of car is big? And why not have a look at the boot space and then look at your bike and luggage and picture it packed in various ways (to determine which one is better).

If upright is the only way to go with the frame and you can't get it secured so it doesn't move side to side, then remove the mech...

Put the rear seat cushions on the front seats so you can see where you're going. 😉

It's really very simple. Unless you jump up and down on them to get the boot lid shut you won't bend the rear mech unless of course you're spectacularly heavy handed. Use some old towels to separate frames and wheels.

tape the mech forward to the stay if it bothers you that much. I can get 2 people and 2 bikes and camping kit in a clio or 3 people and 3 bikes in a golf so you'll be fine.

If you can't fold the seats down I'd put the wheels, seatposts and saddles and luggage in the boot then put the frames across the back seat.

I reckon you need a 7.5 tonne can for such a task.

My bike doesn't fit in complete in a 850...in fact it doesn't seem to fit complete in any car, but that is down to the long seatpost I have...I need to remove the wheels to get it to fit...not a major issue - it won't sit upright without adjustment to the saddle - I don't do that on the trail so don't see why I should to get it in the car!

If you do want it upright, another tip is to stick the chain on the biggest ring on the front - helps protect the teeth.

I can fit* me and a bike in an MG midget, you'll be fine.

Both wheels out, drop the forks out, then it all just collapses into the footwell.

Could probably put it on the parcel shelf if I had the roll bar on, but it be inthw way without the bar in place.

Mondeo estate with the seats down = at least 2 complete bikes on their side, but actually a bit of a pain to get in and out.

Small side of the split seat down = 2 bikes with front wheels and saddles off, wheeled in upright.

With wheels and saddles off, they can hide under the load bay cover with the seats up along with a few bags, helmets etc.

Yet to try 4 people, 4 bikes, 4 lots of bags + kit... Luckily most of my friends have hardtails.

Crikey, crikey! You must have used some racks for that lot?
