These old Ergon grips are still grippy and serviceable, but the magnesium horns have scraped too many walls and posts. The paint is half off, and there are endless scratches and pits.
Thought about buffing out with drill + rotary tool-bits then coating with some kind of Hard-wearing spray paint. Any ideas of this is workable and would they need undercoat? I like to recycle stuff but if it turns out too expensive will most likely buy another pair. Any help appreciated thnks

Black electrical tape or a sharpie black marker pen. You will scratch them again sooner rather than later so may as well go for a hack rather than a proper fix.

^ Hopefully won’t be getting scraped again as they’re getting moved onto a foot-bike with a kickstand. These were from a used bike I bought,I tend to look after stuff, OCD! Also want not to feel the scratched up texture which, is ok with gloves but don’t always wear gloves esp in spring/summer. But yes the environment matters too, that’s why want to recyle. I suppose could just polish them? 🤩

From what I remember you cant just paint magnesium, (well you can, but it doesnt work properly). Normally dichromate dip, then primer/paint iirc.
Scotch them cack with 380 and then go to 800 n smooth it out
Acid etch primer then paint.
powder coating will work just fine on magnesium , your local alloy wheel refurbers will sandblast the old paint off as part of the process.
Spray.bike might work if powder coat works. You could email them and ask.
