Down slope, grass - 2m descent at ~20-30 degrees from horizontal (with a 10m flatish leadup), terminated by a coping stone with a slight dip before it (3-4 inches, about wheel sized), then followed by a 4ft vertical drop to concrete.

I've been considering hitting it at full belt and pre-jumping the coping stone but that feels kinda rushed and like I'm going to land nose first if I cock it up and clip the back wheel, or even if I miss it as I'll struggle to lift the 30 degrees out of the slope.

Thoughts?

yunki is making the most sense so far 🙂 if it had a flat launch site or no coping stone I'd be happy enough, but the stone gets me psychologically. It's the first obstacle out of my door on my local ride and I'm sick of pootling past it on the concrete path!

I'd considered manualling off the top but I think the rear would hook up on the dip before the stone, leaving me pivoting nicely about that point. Maybe you're right though, with enough momentum.

rs - wouldn't like to do this to myself!

What that man said. Manual through the dip before the coping and then suck up the drop, race stylee. Making it a little smaller and hopefully stoping the bike bucking you over the front. Hitting things with pace too seems to mean they don't take so long to get through and go smoother than you thought, look bigger/further ahead.

Yup, dodgy. If I unexpectedly came accross the situation above ^^^ at speed I'd prolly try and bunnyhop the lip from a good way back. If I knew it was there, I'd go a different way TBH...

Can you go diagonal through it, so that you're not hitting the (and subsequently your) lip of the coping stone straight on?
That would potentially give you a break before you launch off the four foot drop (to concrete I might add).
Personally, path sounds better to me, but then I don't have hero status as a rider. 😆

A 'risky' manoeuvre at the start of every ride - no thanks!

Thanks for all the input - when you say push through it jedi, in what sense? I suspect I do need to MTFU a bit and try it (there's a smaller one nearby that's a bit of cake, but it has no coping stone). I'd considered the hit it diagonal thing but when leaving the ground I really don't like starting off on diagonals - I've holes stitched up in my shin to prove that, and a bad relationship with one local pub after they refused to let me call an ambulance while I was spraying blood 3 or 4 foot across the path 🙂

ian - yep, thats definitely the ending I have currently in mind!

Can you not start your bunnyhop on the downslope and adjust your attitude in-flight so you land level?

I've done this on stuff, but not on that scale 🙂 Just bunnyhop but pull up on the bars just the right amount.

Alternatively, do it trials stylee. Roll down the slope, wheelie into backhops, hop onto coping stone then gracefully ease onto the ground.

Its the angle of the downslope that gets me really, if it were flat I'd not even be thinking about it, but the fairly steep angle means that hopping it leaves a good few degrees to rotate mid-air and trialsing onto it (which I don't like doing on an NRS at 16 stone!) is a bit of a one-off attempt, cock it up and I'll be broken.

I'll keep working towards it, if I nail it I'll video it to show how I finally pull it off lol.

Alternative without backhops would be to roll gently down the slope, turning into the dip then hop the back round so you're parallel to the wall (assuming it's a wall).. then hop on to it then bunnyhop sideways off it. Prob easiest 🙂

Same occurred to me. Of course, I don't have the skill to do this, but Ilike the idea. And quite elegant, too.

Hmmm I'm thinking it's time to practice my 360s. Not on a lightweight XC frame, but I've needed a reason to build up my new back trials wheel and I think this is it.

I'd sideways hop it as well, if it's easy to get into the right position for that without falling off. Failing that, either fill in the dent to make it a smoother dropoff or do a hop before the dent.

I think I'll add "lose a stone" to the list of pre-requisites too, by then I may have plucked up the courage AND won't snap a lightweight XC frame and rims. Sound like a plan?

Just ride round it and go and enjoy your local trails with teeth and face intact. If it were on a trail and had a softer or slightly sloped non-concrete landing it would be easier to do, but it sounds like a bit of a do or die kind of thing and panicking first time will slap you right onto the concrete. What bike you doing it on?

I'm not against listening to jedi, nice to learn from a pro, but I'm not sure how it would apply to the one in question as I'm fairly sure that if I just unweight the front by pushing out I'll grab a faceful of dirt due to the rear hooking up and me heading at 30 degrees down? I suppose the rear hooking up shouldn't really affect me if I've got some pace, but I am still going down - am I not going to land very much nose-first? I'll try it on the smaller one and see how I get on!

Do you own that obstacle? i.e. can you build a bit of 'shore or even lay a plank over it? Or maye just an inverted 360 with hand-plant off the coping.

Do you have a one of those riding buddies that takes one look at any obsticle regardless of size or general sketchyness and just hits it first time? See if they want to session your local trail and watch them do it, i find stuff easier if you can see some one go through it first (providing they don't crash!) As a second option beg/borrow/steal a full face helmet lean back and send it! Trying to avoid the hole with your front wheel by using Jedi's advice.

why would the back wheel hook? you have unweighted the front and have forward momentum and your weight will already be behind the bb from the push

Jedi - not sure, I've just had similar things do that to me in the past hence my nerves around it and being unsure of that method (it's my normal method so having cocked it up that way on smaller similar ones I didn't want to do it on this one, fairly sure it would be missing teeth and snapped frame here). I'm probably just making mountains out of molehills

Unfortunately I have no-one else around me that would nail it first time. That's not true, I do know someone who would, but he has 8" of soft travel and no common sense in such circumstances. With 8" of travel I'd give it a shot. With 3.5 I want to nail it properly rather than survive it lol.

jedi - I could be tempted to take you up on that, quite easily, maybe even book in a session!

molgrips - it's not THAT bad a dip, but it is wheel radius and about 6-8" deep, that combined with the downslope means that your wheels effectively drop into a "stopper" as you pass over it, like when you're riding along in a peat bog and hit a small ditch you didn't spot and find yourself on the floor wondering what happened! I've probably over-talked it now and just need to do it.

i'm all for jumps, drops and the like. but similar scenarios have definitely left me erring on the side of the not bothering. if you really have to ride down it, i'd go for hopping over the stone as much as you can, and any success in getting the back wheel to touch down before the front is a bonus. at the very least you want both wheels landing simultaneously. it's never going to look or feel very graceful!

sounds like you've psyched yourself out of this a lot...!

try getting off your bike and walking it down the line you would take, feel if wheels do actually 'hook' on the coping.

i had a very similar scenario with a path gap(TM) which had also had a bit of a divet before a coping on a wall and about a 4ft drop. took me a wee while to balls up but it was easy once i had done it the first time. and the grass on the other side of the path where i would be landing was probably a bit more reassuring.
