This is my preferred way of transporing a bike - normally inside a bike bag. However, bought a new bike recently and slightly concerned about it's safety, given that I read on here recently about someone having their bike nicked from inside the car at Glyncorrwyg. Have been thinking about locking my bike to the inside of the car but obviously the lock could still be cut.
I did meet someone out biking who said he insured his bike with a company who covered bikes inside locked cars but that the poilcy was £100+ per annum - anyone know about such a policy?
Any advice/thoughts on this most appreciated?
Make sure it's covered up. If I'm leaving a bike in my car I take the front wheel off so it appears 'flatter' and less obvious and then cover it in seriously dodgy looking bed sheets and make it look a mess. That combined with deadlocking the only realistic way the bike would be nicked is smashing the windscreen or nicking the car...
Covering up obvious items like mp3 players etc is probably equally important. They might break in to nick that and then spot a flash bike.
I looked a e&l they have quoated me £22 a month or 220 a year. but you get extra benafits if you pay monthly.
There is an letter in the new MBR about a guy's bike getting nicked out of the back of his bike.
I am going to try locking my bike inside my car from now on, or i might just put it inside me sleeping compartment in my tent 🙁
i have a kyptonite disc lock with the large chain, i can padlock the bike to the seat struts in my car if i load the bike in rear end 1st. A mate had his bike nicked out of his car. just smashed the window and helped themselves.

how small is this bike?
I lock mine in my car a lot.
(Pug 306 hatch) Have taken back seat cushions out (so seats fold flatter), bike lies flat, wheels in, covered with dark sheet - to make less visible. I use a windsurfer locking cable (3M steel plastic coated cable) goes through frame, wheels, seat and rucksack (as kit also in car) and car seat mount loop.
I also try to park in visible places but slightly back (ie so passers by don't see contents but can se car) and back right up to objects.
It's the best I can do a the price I want to pay...... but I suspect you're always at risk parking at biking venues....
I can remember an article in MBR where the editor had his bike nicked from inside his car while it was at the Mway services on the way back from a ride in Wales. It was left alone for about 10 minutes.
I used to just take both wheels off - that way the seats could stay up and the parcel shelf in place. Job done! That was in the Saab 9-3 and Subaru Forester. If you have a reasonable size boot it should be doable, and I always thought it was the safest way to leave the bike.
Would normal car insurance cover it?
Cos if they had to smash a window to get into the car to steal a bike then how is that your fault?
Or is this a bit in the small print...?
There's generally a limit of around £250 for stuff inside the car that's covered on a normal car poilicy.
i was told by m and s that as i have away from home cover my bike was covered if it got nicked from my roof rack but id not like to test it ;-(
I always leave my bike in the car, Never that comfortable doing it, but think it is the safest way to leave a bike.
