Hi

Im off to the Alps for a sneaky weekend with the lads soon

Im about to book a hire car but not sure what we need

There are 4 of us with 4 bikes in bike bags

Do we need 2 Clios between us or else willl everything fit in a Mondeo or even an Espace?

Im honestly cluless and cant believe we didnt think of this before

So come on Alps regulars

What do you do for car hire when theres more than 2 of you travelling?

Cheers

I could only get bikes in a mondeo with seats folded.

Are you using a cycle carrier or roof bar carrier?

If not then 2 cars for 4 people and 4 bikes.

If can leave the boot open and don't mind scratching the bikes then that'll fit but you risk damaging the bikes or freezing.

2 Renault Clio's with the rear seats folded would do the job.

A Mondeo estate will fit 4 adults and 4 bikes in the boot, but not in bike bags. Pedals and wheels need to be removed. You will need a roofbox for the bags unless you pack very light and don't mind having some luggage in the cabin.

The Clio, according to one of my mates, the rear seats don't fold down very well, so its difficult to get a bike in full stop. He's a bit fussy about his car though so suspect this isn't strictly true...

Are you driving from the UK? Get a crewcab Transit or Vivaro, or even a small minibus. Not many hire companies will allow you to take vehicles abroad though.

PS: Just tidied up my car ready to sell if you are interested. 2003/53 Mondy Estate, 67k ish, 130TDCi, roadtrip tested to Austria and back with above 4 adults, 4 bikes and roofbox ๐Ÿ™‚ I have just used a hair dryer to remove the GB sticker though so you'd have to invest in a new one ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have a Megane Scenic, comfortably got 3 and 3 in. Don't think 4 and 4 would have been possible without a roofbox though.

Many/most UK rental vans/minibuses/cars don't have the insurance green card. So need to request specifically and may be an extra fee. Certainly was the case when I moved a load of stuff (including numerous mountainbikes ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) from Bristol-Holland.

Two small cars is normally cheaper than an Espace, when we travel to France we always hire two Clios or equivalent.
