[Closed] how many bikes do you own?? bank balance under attack

I probably need to "man up", but I find myself wanting a bike for every occasion.

Ive got a XC/AM hardtail, a jump hardtail and a freeridey bike.

But I cant help thinking I that my xc hardtail struggles a bit when I go on a long ride which is very rough, or go to stainburn forest for example. So I cant stop looking at the likes of Orange 5's and Trek remedys.

How many bikes do you own? Its getting expensive and do I need to just make do with what ive got???

In theory I have 2, my Am/trail bike, Ironhorse Mk3 atm soo to become an Ibis Mojo, and a road bike which is older than me which I use for commuting, was given to me for free and I spent £10 on it so if that counts i dont know!? I also have the use of an xc hardtail which I built and kinda own 1/3 of it but it is really a family run around which anyone can use.

The bike isn't struggling you are!

If you try and own a bike for every occasion then you will never have the right one for the actual situation you are in.

You can have different bikes for different riding but don't blame them and think a new one will make everything better.

quite likr the idea of a cross but no point owning bikes that dont get regular use IMHO so 5 is my personal limit suppose I could loose the hardtail if you made me.

29er FS
29er HT
29er SS
29er Tourer (Fargo)

Roadbike
Old Road Bike (mid 80's) - never ridden and never will be. Sat in shed.
Jump Bike (to ride with my Nephew who's now changed to BMX)
26" Kona SS (for sale at some stage as i don't ride 26" any more)
26" Spesh Hardrock (my ex commuter bike) Sentimental first mtb.
Pub/Hack Bike (fugly 69er)

So that'll be ten then. I tend to hoard them as selling big bikes is not hugely easy. I own the Mrs' bike really as well as i bought it in the hope she'd ride it which she very rarely does.

erm

Fairly bling AM
Heavy Freeride
Light weight RACE ONLY hard tail (but if its a lots of miles ride I'll use it)
an old Preston that's in the shed needing TLC

I would like a BMX and a money no object DH but Mrs Ming might turn me into coat hangers if I suggested it!

I thought I had 5, but just realized there's 6 and a mostly complete other one, a broken claude butler tourer frame and a specialized enduro frame lurking too. How did that happen?

My excuse, which is even practically true, is that I traded a bunch of fairly worthless parts for mine, couldn't have sold them probably so it's no loss.

FS - Turner 5 spot
HT - Pipedream sirius (currently SS)
Road/CX - Airborne Carpe Diem (pauper alu version) (currently built as road SS)

I chose them all specifically because they're adaptable frames. That way if the mood fancies I can just swap a few bits and bobs and have a different riding experience without having the expense / hassle of loads of bikes sitting there largely unridden.

at the minute:

1- XC/Trail HT MTB
1- Jumpy/DH(ish) MTB
1- 26" rigid SS MTB (almost finished)
1- Road bike (primarily for commuting)
1- BMX

That's the current lot I favour the MTBs could ditch the BMX but then it's not worth much so I may as well keep it. I've owned a couple of DH bikes and "AM" bouncers and given my skill levels and the amount of use they'd see Vs the cost and maintenance I'll stick to HTs for the forseeable...

1 mtb hardtail
2 plastic road bike
3 steel road bike commuter/ foul weather mile muncher

Perversely it's the cheapest bike, number 3, that gets far more use than the others as I don't have a car.

2 but ideally I'd have 2 more! Currently have a do-it-all which would be better off as a 1x9 downhill/jump bike, and a road bike. I want a longer, lightweight xc hardtail and a bmx to round off the collection!

1x big bouncy bike
1x not so big bouncy bike
1x jumpy HT
1x nice weather road bike
1x crap weather road bike
1/2x frame, forks, wheels etc for another big bouncy bike lying around. Should get it sold really.
Need a pub/hack bike really. 😉

Too many, though trying to reduce them:
Hardtail trail bike
XC FS race bike
29er Hardtail
29er rigid single speed
TT bike
Road bike summer
Road bike winter and turbo
Cross bike.

Ironically it is the rigid inbred 29er single speed that is getting the most ride time.

Probably going to add a winter bike into the mix - steel HT with an Alfine 11spd or similar. Quite fancy a Spot belt drive one ...

DH - session 10
FR/AM - Iron Horse 6.4
XC/FR/AM - Saracen Zen HT built from spare parts (go to bike now)
XC FS - Boardman Team FS
Road - Giant SCR 1.5
Commuter/not used - Muddy Fox Adventurer, first proper mtb

Two broken FS parts bikes around too.

Want
Carbon road bike - frame will probably be bought soon
XC short travel HT - probably a bad idea but fancy a event/race bike.

Two.

Coyote Dual built up as a singlespeed. Love the bike, fits me perfectly with the added bonus of being practically worthless so no mileage in selling. 8)

DMR Trailstar LT the newest addition to the family. Early days yet, still getting to know each other but the signs are good. Probably a keeper.

Would love a full suss but it would be a luxury purchase as there's to many other things ahead in the list.

One mountain bike and one road bike. I currently feel no need for a bouncy bike (I have an MmmBop) 'cos my hardtail does everything I need it to. I may buy something bigger at some point for next years Alpine trip...

Thankyou indeed MrTall thats exactly how to get round the SO i'll tell all the bikes i ride were actually bought for her, the plan is foolproof.........

Inbred Rigid SS (which needs a tensioner as it dropped the chain about 30 times in 3 miles yesterday).
Ti 456 (which is the most used)
Prophet (with 2 sets of forks - Domains and Float 32's - for DH or XC when my backs playing up!)
Scott Sub 20 for commuting.

Probably have enough parts to build up 2 more frames but just wouldn't use them as my 456 seems to do most things 😀

Would like a 456 Summer season to stick my domains on though...

And a 2nd hand DH bike for the couple of uplift days I do a year.

And a proper road bike.

And a Scootech. (Anyone know where they sell these anymore, used to have loads of fun on mine until I snapped it dropping a flight of stairs!)

And a new motorbike.

I've worked out the other week that my bikes cost almost twice as much as my cars 😯

too many/not enough

the problem with having [s]lots of[/s] a few bikes is that pretty much every ride you will spend some time thinking "this bit would be easier with x bike" and that will make you sad.

I know it's "the rider not the bike" but there's a reason suspension is called skill compensator same as there is a reason anyone who has to pedal lusts for lightweight. The right bike on the right trail will get you further/faster than the wrong one.

there are lots of good arguments for having a few different bikes but there just as many for having one all rounder and making do with it (it's probably a lot more zen too)

Rigid SS
HT
Road (winter/commuter)
Road (race)
Track
SS CX

I want to build a geared CX bike for racing next year. However, I just don't need (or really want) 7 bikes.

Track and SS CX will go. Five will be a better number, though three would be ideal.

1 and 1 on the way as I couldn't resist the Boardman Pro at £900.

Both are 100mm xc hardtails but the current bike is my off road commuter and the new one will be my weekend and extend commutes in the summer bike. I'll probably put my Pace rigid forks on the commuter and then with the Rohloff it will be virtually maintenance free. I might put the current Rebas on the Boardman and either put the new forks away till I need them or sell them.

4 - Cotic Simple for off-road, Focus Cayo for on, Charge Plug (fixed) as my commuter and a Specialized P2 (fixed) as my pub bike/general run about.

Would love to add a CX but I don't think it would go down too well...

This thread is frightening 😯

I've been getting rid of a lot of stuff as I'm moving, but when I read the OP's question I wasn't sure...now I am!

A couple are frames/framesets only, but I also have the components to make into full bikes 😳

17.5" Genesis Altitude Ti titanium frame (2009) - for sale
19" Genesis Altitude Ti titanium frame (2010) - not for sale
18.5" (actual) Trek EX9/ Rockshox Rev. Team frameset (2010) -for sale
Haro Mary XC 29er hardtail (2009) - not for sale
19" Merlin Team Ti titanium frame - not really for sale...although it really should be!
Santa Cruz Tallboy x2 (2011) 1 black (finished and not for sale) and 1 orange (frame/ monarch 3.3 only) and probably for sale.
Vintage 56" Raleigh Royal SS (Reynolds 531)with rear at 132.5" - same as Merlin as most things are already in storage and it's getting crowded!
That makes 8 and needs to be whittled down to 3 or 4.

No wonder there's no time to ride them atm, too busy working to pay for them.... 😐
