We will be in touch
My Rebas are 2 years old now, ridden every weekday and some others, in gritty lightweight XC conditions whatever the weather. That's probably 600 hours riding. All I do is clean and lube the stanchions every few rides. They'll still go 6 months and need no pumping up, and they feel perfectly smooth. The manual says service them at at 100 hours. So I've gone six times that now. What's the benefit in me spending £25 on seals, more on oil, and a couple of hours messing about when they seem just fine? I can't believe they are short of oil unless the seals dry up and leak air - and then surely I'd just replace the seals?
- What's likely to be going wrong inside there? We must have lots of other fork neglecters on this forum. Do I really need to do something?
At least do a oil change in the lowers, its very easy and shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. The full service guide is on the rockshox site. You don't need to change the seals if you don't want to.
I left mine almost three years, though I rode on average a couple of times a week. I serviced them about a year ago and all I did was strip them down, cleaned the internals and replaced the oil. I didn't replace any seals as they were perfectly fine. I noticed instantly when using the forks after the service how much performance was lost. An oil change in the lowers is quite important as the prescribed amount isn't very much.
I'm going to service them again in the next few days.
I am about to get my pikes serviced for the first time in a year and a half as the lockout has stopped working, so it seemed like a good time to get them done. I am ham fisted so getting TFT to do them for me.
OK, changing the oil only is not too bad I guess - I have at least got the 15wt already and need to only get some 5wt. I'll save cash by not replacing the seals as I'm guessing by the air-seal performance that they must still be OK.
Had a lefty on my old prophet - 2 years without a service and no probs.
Had a set of magura asgards on a XTC for 3 years with no service - still plush when I sold the bike (told the buyer no service had been done)
However, I not have a set of Lyrics and I going toget them serviced after winter. They are performing well, but with the cost of a new set of lyrics at around £700 it seems like a good idea.
Could be that they feel fine to you although they could have degraded in performance slowly without you realising? What if they failed mid-ride. I know- a big what if- probably not but a service wouldnt hurt! 😀
I've a set of 3.5 year old Fox Floats that have never been serviced, still seem to be fine, although I am planning on servicing this year sometime!
Reba/Rev/Pike/Recon Air Service Kit
So TFT do a oil/dust seal kit £17 and a Reba/Rev/Pike/Recon "Air Service Kit" £25. Does the Air service kit also cover the motion control O rings? -The picture indicates the kit contains 5 O rings, but I can account for only three in the service manual for the air spring side.
They also do a cheaper "motion control service kit" which I assume contains nothing for the air spring, - but that appears to contain four O rings which is too many.
How so?
Assuming one should ideally do the lot, what's actually to be bought and is there somewhere cheaper than TFT for expensive O rings?
