Coming up to 2 weeks now, and I'm still in too much pain to ride. Pretty much got full range of movement, it's just putting any force through it that really hurts. Tried to ride on the road last week, and potholes and road buzz were killing me. Broke both my radius and ulna, and was in plaster for 6 weeks.

I was in plaster for 6 months, now out for 18 months and still suffer from time to time - mine was in the foot though, so lots of pressures etc!

Hello,
There is no exact science or time frame. The simple rule is if it hurts rest a while longer.
No one really believes me when I say I have had 64 separate incidents of broken bones. I am clumsy and stupid!
On one occasion I was so desparate to race my bike to soon after a massive get off. (this one had an engine and 181BHP) I broke my wrist again without even crashing. Another 6 weeks in a cast.
Swimming is the best excercise for recovery in my opinion.

How old are you? You must've spent more of your life in plaster then out, unless you overlap injuries or something lol. Thanks for the advice.

Recovery also depends a lot on age - I shattered my leg when I was 14 and needed a couple of operations, an external fixator and some casts. I was running again after 3 months ๐Ÿ˜€

18 years later, I suspect it would take a bit longer to fully heal up!

Sorry, not very useful post I'm afraid, but in general, if it hurts, take it easy.

Cheers, Rich

I broke my ankle a few years ago, six weeks in plaster and another six weeks before I could go back to work. I didn't really try the bike much before that.

Tried a bike the day I got my knee out of plaster. The hard bit was clipping in and out. It wasn't that my knee gave me any problems but I had no power to make the twist. I put a flat pedal on for a week or so which resolved that issue.

I've watched a guy at an MX race saw his own cast off his arm so he could race 2 weeks before he was supposed to have it taken off.

I'm 43, and I broke my radius and ulna back in April just in time to miss a lot of the great Spring weather. Whilst it was painful/weak when the cast came off, it was fine within ~4 weeks.

I had to stick to a roadbike for the first two weeks before I got back on my mountain bike - definitley struggled with the road buzz too at first. After that, I took it easy offroad for a further couple while it strengthened up. All good now though. I can relate to the frustration, but in the longer term it has made me get out more and appreciate it.

Hope you make a speedy recovery!

Broke wrist early Dec. Cast off mid Jan. Rode bike immediately after - hurt like hell! Carried on riding with a decreasing amount of pain for about 4 months. Now 100% OK. I am ancient though!

I broke my radius this April, and was in cast for 7 weeks. I listened to the consultant about rehab time and he said no riding the bike for 12 weeks, as if I fell off the bone was no where near healed and likely to fracture again, so a bit irresponsible to ride really. He also said its not fully healed for 12-18months and then may still be painful.

I got on the bike again after about 13 weeks. On the bike its ok, except it aches a little after a long down hill.

Make sure you keep doing the physio exercises you were given too that will help alot.
