Just about to put a couple of Thule Proride 591 carriers on my roof bars. Is there any guidance on how far in/out they should be mounted or is it personal preference?
Obviously don't want handlebars sticking out too much. Probably a dumb question but if I'm going to cut the roof bar rubber strip to suit I'd rather only have to do it the once.

So it is a comfortable reach to put and get bikes.

Wherever you want. I doubt you'll be hitting things anyway even if mounted as far out as possible. The roof is nowhere near the width of the car usually. Anyway, positioned so both bikes don't hit each other's bars will usually have them as far out as possible.
