Been using the GPS on my phone to track rides, thinking of buy an proper GPS device, going to have to be a cheaper one mind.

Liking the look of the Garmin Edge 200 and the Breadcrumb feature looks interesting. I can sort of piece together what this feature does but have yet to find a good enough explanation to confirm.

So, what is the Breadcrumb feature and what does it allow you to do?

Ta.

Basicly it shows a previously recorded route (or via a bit of faff you can create one and export it to the GPS but it's not exactly drag&drop simple), then the GPS shows the track as a line and you as an arrowhead, if you zoom in so that the screen only shows the next 50m or so then you can use it to figure out junctions etc. The main downside is it encourages lazyness so if it stops working then you'll be in the middle of nowhere and even if you have a map it's possible to not have the foggiest where you are on the route. That and it invariably involves lots of backtracking to find the turn off you should have taken, especialy at anything less clear than a T-junction.

In my experience it works quite well on my Edge 305. I've used it a couple of times when I've planned routes on Garmin Connect then uploaded them to the device. The downside is as mentioned above, it's quite easy to go off course but the device tells you within 20-30 metres.

Obviously, it shouldn't be totally relied on and a map as a backup is always a good idea.
