there is a grub screw on the non-drive side

there is grub screw just inside the cassete carrier on the drive side.

undoing these doesnt seem to free anything up?

Before you do either of the obove suggestions 🙄 I'd try undoing those grub screws first, if that's indeed what they are. Just pulling blindly is gonna knacker stuff. 🙂

Ignore the above, two shire horses is what you need, pull blindly, what could go wrong?

i've undone the grub screws and nothing is moving easily. i put them back in so I don't lose them.

pulling is all very well but there's not a lot of purchase to pull with...

to mean that the grub screws were undone.

if you grip on the silver ( anodised? ) bit you're less likely to mark it, but one end in a vice and the other held in pipe grips or similar, give a bit of a twist if you like may help free things off.

Alternatively, try hitting the axle with a hammer, which should drive the axle complete with one side bearing out......

Loosen grubscrew on one side, tap axle with a hammer on that side, axle and alloy collar should come off to the other side. Might need a reasonable tap depending how tight the press fit is.

wearing ear defenders enables you to hit hard enough without distress

or at least, distress to oneself.

My thinking would be that the grub screws are there for a reason,so take them out and put them somewhere SAFE 😉 Get two sets of Pipe grips, some wet and dry and some tape.Wrap the tape round the ends ,then wrap the wet and dry round the tape.
On with the pipe grips and rotate opposite ways ...Good luck 🙂
