I have a Sram group set on my bike and wondered how compatible it is with Shimano bits? I have a spare (new) SLX cassette and KMC chain and was thinking of making it 1x10 rather than the 2x10 it is now. Will the SRAM shifters and SRAM rear mech work with the Shimano cassette and KMC chain?

Yes. The only bits that aren't compatible are the shifter/rear mech combo. SRAM front shifter will work with Shimano front mech and vice versa but you can't do the same wit the rear shifter/mech.
Chains, cassettes, etc will all be cross compatible.
