I've done plenty of them, they're easy. Just sit down and pedal, when you can take the long way around the bends as this is the shallowest route. I never needed anything more than 41x21.

Alpe d'Huez
Col d' Aubisque
Col de la Croix-de-Fer
Col du Galibier
Col du Glandon
Hautacam
Col de Joux-Plane
La Plagne
Col de la Madeleine
Col du Tourmalet

I spent four years racing and training in France

Which ones Ton?

I have done a few including the Aubisque in the Pyrenees. They are not usually silly steep just long, very long. The weather conditions can play a big part too. When I did the Aubisque in 2005 it was 40 degrees centigrade!

In terms of gearing I used 39/27 in 2005, I now use 34/27.

Over the years I have done quite a few including
col du tourmalet
Col d'Aubisque
Alpe De Huez
mont Ventoux
Col du Galibier
Croix de Fer
col de Peyresourde
They are just big not steep but long, relax your not in a race, get into a comfortable gear and cadence and just ride.

Ton personnally I would forget all the: I only needed, and I did it in this time, as firstly they are not you and secondly you get far too many Walter Mitty characters on here. Remember it is not an ego trip its going to be fun,and it will be.IMO You want a compact or triple with a big cassette on the back 26,27 or more. Pack lots of layers and remember to take lots of pics.

I did the Joux-Plane on a mountain bike, with several "technical dabs" worse thing was the sun beating down, frying my brains, the actually climbing was just making sure you turned the pedals over. Ed20001 has it spot on, do your own thing, remember to look at the view, take it steady.

I did the Rettenbach climb (HC in the tour of Germany) on a Scott Nitrous thoughtfully equiped with bar ends. Took a looooong while but i got there eventually. I reckon if you are patient there is not much to be scared of.
