Bought a Hope Vision HID light (the Mark I version) about 4 years ago. it's probably had about 30 hours use, as kids arrived soon after and the night riding visa got stamped a whole lot less.
Checked the light earlier in the year and it wasn't working. I've been trying to get out on my road bike very early recently, so I've taken another look to see if it's an economically viable repair.
The charger LED turns from red to green eventually. I've checked the voltage on the charged battery with a multimeter- it's showing 6.4 Volts. It should produce 14.8 Volts. This could just be my ineptitude with a multimeter- taking the reading from the '3 O'clock pin and '9 O'clock pin on the output jack on the battery.
My first guess was the bulb had gone- reading other threads this could be £50-£80 to repair- questionable investment when LED technology has come on so much and HID is old technology.
Now I'm getting a low voltage on the battery I'm wondering if it could be the battery or charger, although I wasn't aware that a battery could produce a lower voltage if faulty.
Any advice would be really helpful. I know Hope customer service has a good reputation and I could sent the whole lot off to them, but if it's likely to cost a lot I might just replace it. Seems a shame though: great bit of kit and hardly used,
is it a lithium ion battery
it sounds like the battery is toast it would self discharge over time until the cells got too low
and then it is goosed .
Smudge will be able to make up a battery for it
but you need to make sure the bulb still works first. they are a tad dear.
not worth repairing IMHO
Thanks trout. I'm guessing a replacement Hope battery would be about £80. I guess my option would be replace the battery or buy second hand from eBay to get a battery; unless their is another light I could get for that price get a similar performance LED light.
I guess the Hope Vision 1, although not as bright, may be more road bike-friendly.
Hi Fella, Hopefully you'll pick this up. I have a bar mounted Hope HID which I'm thinking of selling. Its the Euduro version with two batteries both of which still give me the full running time
The maion problem I have is that the charger has packed up. The other problem is I no longer have a hope stem to mount it.
PM me if you interested.. not quite sure why clicking on my name takes you thro to my website but there is a page on there with all my contact details...
I'd send it to Hope. They have a habit of fixing these things FOC.
