I'm about to convert a 1st generation pro2 to 12x142mm and came across talk on here of broken axels but nothing specific.

Does anyone have any experiences of breakages?
Do they really break axels or is it just fatties?
There was a mention that some axels work better with Pro2s. Which ones and why?
I assume you can't upgrade an old pro2 with pro2 evo internals to solve the problem?

Most breakages have occured on 12mm through-axles since Rock-Shox decided to waist the Maxle-lite at the point where the hub's main loaded bearing then sits unsupported.Re-introduction of a plain gauge Maxle-lite has seen a big reduction in breakages.(heavy duty QR axles are also available, but relatively unknown)

You can upgrade to evo...but the only thing you re-use is the hub shell and pawls!!New axle, end caps, all bearings and freehub body. Not cheap.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm hoping its limited to Maxles then. I'd be using a syntace branded axel.

Thats good to know. The bearings are on there way out anyway so could be an option.

I wouldn't worry too much about it for general mtb and light DH, I've no idea if X-12 is less likely to fail, but I think it would have to be regular clumsy DH use or extreme fatty use to cause a 12mm axle to break. You will survive.

They do go fairly easily with the waisted maxless.Ironically as the through axle gets bigger/stroger the hub axle get correspondingly thinner. The centre section was then unsupported, and failed.Evo axles use larger O.D axle with larger beraings thus retaining the wall thickness.
But as its the syntace one you should be o.k with the original one.

They do still snap even with a full thickness axle supporting them fully, unfortunately. No surprise really, when you see how little metal is left in them. But most people seem to do all right and Hope will replace it if it snaps.
