This is something I have wondered for ages, can someone enlighten me?-
So, the trials/SS version of the Pro2 hub has offset freehub pawls, meaning only 2 pawls contact at a time, thus doubling the engagement speed from 24 to 48 per revolution.
Ace, clever idea.
But why not do that for all the pro2 hubs, would we all not benefit from faster engagement? From Dh to Xc
Seeing as its for trials, they clearly have no issues with strength?
The only thing I can think is that its for longevity of the pawls, but then more often than not singlespeeds are ridden during the filthier months when wear is at its highest due to water/grit ingress. The pawls will still only 'click' past the 24 notches so the extra wear is negligible anyway.

The wear on the pawls also comes from the contact when pedalling/under load, not just when they 'click' over the ratchet.
On a geared bike you have much more torque being applied through the freehub body when in the larger sprockets and standing pedalling uphill. Halve the number of pawls and you double the load going through them when pedalling, increasing the wear [b]under load[/b] and likelihood of failure.
On a trials bike/SS you wouldn’t be using anywhere near a 34T rear sprocket so I guess you can manage with fewer pawls.
You probably won't notice the difference in engagement unless you're in the wrong gear anyway.

When under load the pawls are 'locked' though? Presumably you're then referring to wear/damage to the pawl seats? Which being the alloy of the freehub I guess could get damaged.
So a singlespeed rider actually puts less strain on a freehub going up steep hills than a geared rider?
