The one that isn't alloy, is it steel or stainless steel? Seen it listed as both. Anyone know the truth?
I may know tomorrow - mine has cracked so a new one is required. fingers crossed for hope legendary "warranty" - its 16 months old.
That's why I'm asking. I got two sets of wheels back in January. One cracked in July, the other was has just gone. Wondering if I should ask them to swap this one out for the steel but I really don't fancy having a big lump of rust on the back of the bike in 6 months time.
Where did yours crack
They both went axially. how about yours?
I've never seen a rusty freehub body. Considering how many are steel... They do however weigh a ton and rather negate the point of having point a semi-fancy hub.
wish I still had the ti ones on the bulb hubs.
along a spline
mine came down the middle of a spline, then migrated to the groove then tracked into the hub following the internal edge where the spline meets the groove.
Never seen one crack, but the Alloy freehub bodies are a pain in the arse when used with a cassette that has a steel carrier. The steel carrier cuts into the splines of the freehub body making it ni-on impossible to get the bas*ard off, without hitting it a few times!!! The alternatives are, get a new alloy freehub body at full whack price wise which will have the same issue unless you change the cassette as well; Or, get a stainless steel one. The + for the stainless steel is that the issue with the carrier cutting into the freehub body is gone. The - is it weighs twice as much as the alloy one (including the pawls and bearings). It is thought that if you use a better quality cassette i.e. XT/XTR standard, then they have a softer carrier that does not cut into the freehub body...as much. Personally I think the only way to stop this issue is to get a stainless steel one. The alloy one is approx 80grams inc pawls and bearings, and 160'ish grams for the s/steel one.
...by the way, hope that helps...if not I'm blaming the vino rouge for my rambling! ๐
It very almost answers the original question. do you know the steel ones to actually be stainless steel? I've seen them listed as both but I'd put money on the fact they don't make alloy, steel and stainless steel.
alu not alloy
i've got a steel one, and no rust after about 8 months. I'm guessing it is stainless
Yes mate, I'm certain they are s/steel...I was not concerned about the minor weight issue...need to shave it off my ass first ๐ ..well, not literally shave it, but the extra was negligible to me. While I was looking I gave Hope a call, they confirmed it was s/steel...plus it would be silly for them to make it from steel due to the issues that come with it, in my opinion that is ๐ Give Hope a bell tomorrow, they are pretty awesome with customer service type things.
Cheers wooly. I'm not worried about the weight either. Not had a light bike since the 90s and it's been longer than that since I was light.
Rob, can we settle on alu alloy? After all, they're not pure alu. But yes, I appreciate that the steel ones are also alloy.
Wow - Hope replacing mine FOC ๐
They've replaced mine like for like as well. Found it Sunday, posted to them Monday, FedEx packet waiting for me on Wednesday. Can't say fairer than that.
