Hope 155mm cranks

May I jump on and slightly expand your question please... What are users experiences of the Hope Evo cranks in general? ie, installation, longevity, etc.

Regarding crank length: I've settled on 165mm over the years (5'10" and 33" inseam). I would be interested to try shorter but would never go back to longer cranks.

I'm surprised there aren't sets of demo cranks in circulation so people can feel the claimed benefits for themselves.

I’ve got hope evo’s in unfashionable 175mm and think they’re great. The first version were a bit odd and needed special tools to fit which made them less popular I think. The evo’s are easy to install and have lasted really well - not scuffed at all (black) but I’m not a crank scuffer generally. I really like them

I’ve had the ebike versions for 2 years to stop pedal strikes. Obviously can’t comment on any power delivery differences, but I like them. There is a 5-10 minute weirdness period when I’ve been on longer cranks, but that quickly goes away. Not sure I’m sensitive enough to notice the handling differences claimed by Joe Barnes. Certainly aren’t detrimental to how the bike feels.

Wouldn’t swap from a perfectly good set of longer cranks unless pedal strikes were an issue, but if you need new cranks anyway I’d consider the 155 length.

I’ve got pretty long legs and find 165mm cranks are great, so I have no reason to think 155mm won’t feel better for shorter legged riders. Can’t comment on 155 for 34” legs though. You definitely don’t lose power, you just shift your ideal cadence range slightly upwards and thus should run a slightly smaller chainring to get the same mechanical advantage.

My misses used to use 150mm cranks on a Levo and I found them very odd to ride, too short for me (average build 5'10).

I really want to try some. Anyone seen a good price on them?

Didn’t even know you could get 155 cranks, have 165 on the Scott and they work very well (not Hope though) would be tempted to try a set of the 155 on the eBike - but not cheap - £155 is the lowest price I can find.

Looking at the torque impact of the shorter lever length...

Assuming starting with the common 170mm/32T setup, going down to the usual 165mm is a 3% which is more than compensated for by dropping to a 30T which is 6% smaller. Going from 170 to 155 is a 9% drop, and dropping from 32T to 28T would overcompensate as it's a 13% drop if your frame even supports it.

To reduce pedal strikes and to try all the other claimed benefits, I’m after a short crank around 150mm that is strong and cheap for a Bosch ebike

Is there a consensus now to the cheapest way to try short and strong cranks, without buying twice?

Any other <£100 short ebike cranks I should shortlist or come recommended

A viable option I’ve struggled to find are SX 155mm cranks that are advertised but nowhere appears to have stock

My 160mm Miranda cranks didn’t bend when I fell off pissed a few months ago, with the bike landing on a pedal.
But they’re on my commuter, not an MTB.

If you don't mind running to Ali Express and just want to have a go, £30 gets you some 155mm Goldix (chortle) cranks, solid chromoly axle, and a Shimano spindle size, but takes a sram ring.  I've got some for the Chinese bike I'm building up for the wife to never actually ride.

667g for the goldix cranks if you want to know.. whether they'll stand up to abuse I don't know yet but if you just wanted to try short cranks cheap..

I read something a while ago that said the 155mm was by far Hope's best selling crank.

Surely someone must have tried them and hated them.

I bought a bike 3 months ago that came with Hope 155mm cranks fitted - I'm 6'1" & was convinced the cranks would fell like I was riding a kiddies bike & I would need to swap them out immediately!

I was coming from 165mm cranks on my previous bike & to be honest I didn't actually feel any noticeable difference in crank length.

I really like them :

Less pedal strikes even though I have dropped the BB by switching to a mullet set-up.

Spin a bit quicker so get optimum rpm out of the TQ motor on the bike.

Feel more balanced / agile on the bike when attacking downhill sections as my feet are closer together so I can rotate my hips into turns easier  - this is especially noticeable when turning sharp towards my leading foot.

My experience is very positive & would buy another set if I changed bike.
