wasn't it just blatant cheating, like avoiding the rocky bits down near the bottom after the berms? who was it who rode through the tape first by the way?

;o)

Just seen all this talk about that line on that right hander on top of the random post descent. What's all this about? It's a bleeding obvious fast line. I took it every lap. I assumed those going round to the left were frightened because it was a drop-in.

Kind of like Worry Gill at the Dalby XC world cup, but with more mincing

You are right.

And, as co founder and co organiser of HtN I can confirm that our official corporate policy is that we couldn't give a rat's ass. 😉

TBH I'd never considered that line before.

In previous events the tape has extended across it so everybody has taken the left route. This year there was no tape and the new tighter and steeper right hand line evolved. It worked well.

Next year we could tape off the easy one and call the new one The Uncle Joe's Mint Balls Heroic Drop In Of Heroes.

I'm not too arsed about the 'new line'. To be honest I'd never spotted it either. There's probably a multitude of other shorter, quicker routes down to the bottom of the hill too if anyone wants to really express themselves 😐

Taking the easy option around the rocky bits elsewhere on the lap is another matter though - cos there was tape across that bit. Some big girlymen must have spotted the smooth, easy option well away from the scary rocks that my 4 year old can ride and so decided to ride through the tape. oh well.

that "new line" IMO fair enough - if you have the skill and bottle you could save a second or two.

Another video that’s a bit rubbish – mainly because I forget to adjust the camera into the right position at the start! A few interesting bits include the random fisherman who joined the race at 3’22’’, an OTB/tree interface at 10’10’’, and some nice snowy shots at 12’38’’.

Phil

Great video, we chatted at the start over a brew, glad you posted it. Shows the course really well, the last lap in the snow was a little slick to say the least!

Good stuff! I wouldn't have noticed the low camera angle is you hadn't mentioned it.

Lots of mincing going on around you and a nice OTB moment on The Endura Free Fall!

Have to say I rode the rocky bits *on a cross bike* until the lap where some naughty boy mountain biker overtook me by riding on the smooth... Have to confess I took the smoother route on the second one just to chase him down and berate him... Ok, berate his back from a distance... 😳

see now this is the thing, it is after all a race so you take the quick line, I think different "MTFU" and "chicken" lines are a good idea in a race especially on singletrack sections but the chicken run has to be longer/slower (think bombhole at HtN1) otherwise anyone racing will just take the fast line. I like taking tricky lines when I'm just out riding but in a race I'll take the quicker one, especially as some right mincer could pass you then hold you up on the next tricky section that doesn't have a chicken run 🙂

The rock sections are hardly tricky and bypassing them is cheating. Next year we will have sharpened bamboo spikes, a tiger and Claymore Mines in place to prevent this.

The short line to The Endura® Free Fall was more technical, so that stays as a reward for rider awesomeness. In fact we may make a feature of it with AWESOME LINE and NOT VERY AWESOME LINE directional arrows.

Already talking to sponsors for next year BTW 😀

Have to say that as someone that was at the back pretty much all the way, there was no tape across the trail even on lap 1. 3 times i wondered to myself, why the course hadnt been set to ride over the rocky section...

No, before that there was a fairly flat section of trail (not much in the way of trees etc in the valley bottom). The trail split with the left hand trail going off over some rocks) whilst the left hand one being flat - this seemed to be the line that everyone took.

cant remember!

it was the bit (actually there a two of them) that had some red and white tape flapping happily in the wind next to them.

the stream crossing can also be bypassed but we had a marshal next to that bit.

the wimps who avoided the Ricky bits and stream crossing should be strung up. With red and where tape.

pook the moral champion.

So no-one saw me leap off a kicker rock, misty flip over the stream gap, then and land in a one footed manual stylee pose, as an alternative to riding through the stream...???

Donk, I hope you're not casting any nasturtiums that I might be a 'right mincer'? I just believe if you're going to win, win in style. And as I wasn't going to win* I might as well keep the style.... 😉

*Hmmm, at that point I might have been winning in the VW category , I just didn't have a clue until the results came out... maybe you have a point

I didn't see anyone other than myself do the rocky bits or for that matter ride the rocks into the stream.

Pretty poor show but hey I was just enjoying myself not 'racing' 8)

I rode the rocks both times (queue the first time) and got out of the other side both times, was proud of myself for that.
