Well - kind of.
On the way home last night, waiting at a pedestrian crossing near Maypole in Birmingham. Light was red, car in front was stopped, I was stopped, car behind was stopped (did I mention that everything had stopped?)
And then...
Crunch!
The car behind has driven into me!
Not rolled into me (as it's up hill - this took some effort on his part). Needless to say I was absolutely livid. No damage to me or the bike and I wasn't even knocked off, but what the hell was he doing for that to have happened?
Honestly though, why the hell do I go out of my way to ride 40 odd miles to and from work in the Winter when there are twunts like this around.
I guess it's just another one to add to the list - along with the painball being shot at me, being hit on a roundabout, coke can being lobbed, muppet threatening to kill me and running me into oncoming traffic etc etc etc.......
his foot slipped off the clutch perhaps? not everybody is actively trying to kill you; some are merely dangerously incompetent ๐
[Pedantic input]It was moving when it hit you[/pedantic input]
Ian
I think he was exhibiting the very annoying trait of continually edging forward in the hope it would get him to his destination quicker.
Ian - I didn't see him moving, therefore he wasn't ๐
plate tectonics ?
I think he was exhibiting the very annoying trait of continually edging forward in the hope it would get him to his destination quicker.
Yeah I don't get why people do this... I mean its less hassle to stick the handbrake on. Also how do you pass your test if you cant hold it on the clutch?
That bugs me as well. I'll be sat there in the ASL at the traffic lights and behind me there's a car continually edging forward. WHY?!
The other thing is cars who sit there at the lights with their foot on the brake pedal. Yes, I know you've got a beautiful rear light cluster of very bright LEDs but STOP F***ING BLINDING ME WITH THEM!
And breathe...
And why are the ones who are edging forward always the slowest people to actually pull away when the lights do change?
I'll be sat there in the ASL at the traffic lights and behind me there's a car continually edging forward.
Although when they do all that and then stall it - I actually stop, turn round and laugh. I shouldn't, but I do ๐
I got told off by a car driver for sitting behind him in the traffic,, he said my helmet mounted light was too bright,,,,
ok it is a little bright, very old and home made ,, no dip or low power option
still i do seem to get noticed with it
Needless to say I was absolutely livid. No damage to me or the bike and I wasn't even knocked off
Well if you didn't get knocked of the bike then the driver couldn't have been going very fast. Hardly worth getting livid about. A couple of months ago a car ran straight into the back of my car as I was sitting in a queue, the female driver was distraught but her insurance covered the damage and it wasn't worth getting angry about.
And if there was no damage to you or the bike then what went 'crunch'?
People make mistakes.
No damage, no injuries, just a daft accident. Jeez, unwind yer knickers.
No damage, no injuries, just a daft accident. Jeez, unwind yer knickers.
Yes, but "nudged at low speed with no significant effect" doesn't sound so sensational. ๐
: P
Yes, I know you've got a beautiful rear light cluster of very bright LEDs but STOP F***ING BLINDING ME WITH THEM
Do you turn your flashing rear lights off at traffic lights then.
Must be great to be perfect though.
Right - so having a car nudge you whilst stationary is perfectly acceptable so long as no one was hurt and no damage occurs? What about drivers who run you off the road into a verge - but you manage to ride off with no damage or injury?
The physical consequences of bad driving may be non-existant once, but to ignore it and hope that no one gets hurt the next time is irresponsible as well.
He should never have been in a position where he was so close that this happened. Hopefully my 'telling off' will mean that next time he isn't such a muppet.
and by the way - it was his bumper that crunched. Although no visible damage to that either unfortunately.
No, its not acceptable, but for what seems like a fairly wee accident with no damage or injury, just doesn't seem worth getting all worked up about.
I never said it was acceptable, but it's not worth getting livid about. When I reach a stage where I live my life in a perfect way then I'll be in a position to be 'livid' at every mistake people make.
Perhaps the situation you found yourself in required a shake of the head at the perp but to get all het up and 'livid' just makes you look like and irritating angry cyclist who can't accept that other road users make mistakes. Do you think you being livid will help him respect cyclists or do you think perhaps a quiet word may have had better effect?
This car hit you with such force that it made the bumper 'crunch' yet caused no damage to the bike?
And had the op not been posted with such sensationalism then it really wouldn't be worth posting.
And the same thing has happened to me before, sitting at a junction a car slowly moved forward and moved against my mudguard - I looked round at driver, she raised her hand and said sorry. Drama over. And I didn't even post about it on here.
A lorry came too close to me on my ride home last night, shall I start a post about how I was almost dragged under it's wheels and I was angry of Ayrshire?
The other thing is cars who sit there at the lights with their foot on the brake pedal
Well not sure about the highway code in the UK but in France and Spain you have to be in control at all time. That mean having your foot on your brake pedal while stopped.
Do they not have hand brakes in france and spain then?
Well in that case I apologise for adding a post on what I thought was quite an unusual incident where a car did come in contact with my bike. I had forgotten that this is a forum for general chat and bike related banter - oh - hang on...
No - I wasn't hurt
No - the bike wasn't damaged
Yes - the car did decide that it would be appropriate to get so close to me that it resulted in physical contact
Yes - the car bumber did crunch
Yes - I had a go at the driver
Full stop - the example you raise regarding the lorry is not comparable as it deals with what could have happened, whereas all I was doing was pointing out what actually did happen. As far as sensationalising it - the title reads "hit by a stationary car" if I had wanted to sensationalise it then it would have read "Incompetant driver shunted me from behind resulting in horrific crunching sound and the potential for serious injury and death".
You're very angry monkeyp, aren't you? I do hope you don't drive as you must be in a constant state of lividity all the time.
Did your display of aggression toward the driver help you in any way?
Maybe my anger is related to the number of incidents that have involved people either being extremely stupid or doing things purposely to endanger my life - see original post. I must admit that my first thought was that this incident surely couldn't have been accidental as it was just so rediculous.
It's OK - I am not permanently angry. I am just suprised that some people would write this off as a fact of riding on the roads today, and if that is your approach then good luck to you. I however felt that this crossed the line of what is an 'acceptable' (in terms of what we have to expect when riding on busy roads) incident and one that actually is not acceptable.
Oh - and by the way, me being livid is probably actually hilarious ๐
As I said before the incident was not acceptable, and to be honest your reaction was over the top.
I'm now actually livid that you chose to use the word 'actaully' where it wasn't needed.
Blimey, you can't even get hit by a car without incurring the STW wrath.
What is it with internet forums and their encouragement of the "I think you'll find..." attitude?
Let's imagine if the thread had been:
"I managaed to bump a cyclist today by slipping off the clutch pedal behind him in traffic. The ****t was livid and had a right go at me - it was only an accident and I didn't even damage his bike!"
The same people would be bashing your bad driving and saying "you're not fit to be on the road", and "of course the rider had every right to be livid, you could have killed him" and "you're a danger to yourself and others, I hope you and everyone you know burns for an eternity in the firey pits of hell after dying long and unspeakably painful deaths". And so on.
Forums. The only place where you're wrong whichever side you're on, even if it's both, and the only place where devils' advocacy is delivery so visciously.
Awaits being flamed into the stone age.
The same people would be bashing your bad driving
I think you'll find that's not the case at all.
Awaits being flamed into the stone age.
Nope. I totally agree.
I reckon monkeyp's car did what I did a while ago (although I was on my bike and I hit a car) - anticipated the traffic pulling away and got it wrong. The reason I did it was because it was an uphill pull-away at some shitty roadwork traffic lights. As the car's brake lights went off I cranked... and stopped dead on the boot of the car. Quite embarrassing I can tell you. Especially as the woman in the car (nice new Crossfire) was so nice about it.
I was livid!

I'm quite cross you spelled 'actually' 'actaully' actually
You must also be livid that you can't do the 'quotes' thing.
I got nudged at some lights a few months back by some cock warrior riding the clutch in a BMW whiles't eyeing up some girl on the pavement, the only difference was I was in a bloody car in broad daylight! Genius...

Not particularly.
I had something fairly similar happen last week at a city centre junction. I was at a give way sign, waiting for traffic to pass along the main road I was about to cross when bump! A silver Merc rolled into the back of me as I was trackstanding.
I wasn't knocked off and there was no damage done, but I turned round expecting at least an apologetic gesture of some sort but the guy (50s ish) just shrugged dismissively and looked away. Spotted a traffic warden at the other side of the road, so calmly got off my bike and went for a word with the driver. Gave him a slightly condescending ticking-off - without being aggresive or abusive, safe in the knowledge I was completely in the right - in a sightly louder-than-necessary voice so that the people gathering to watch could hear clearly enough. Got my apology and bid the driver good day. As I headed off, the traffic warden called out "good for you son!" and gave me the thumbs up.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, truth be told!
Motorists tend to go ballistic at the thought of anyone so much as breathing on their vehicles - ever brushed a wing mirror with your bag? - I always think this is pathetic when there's no damage done, so why act the same as them?
