After a lovely evening ride in the Surrey Hills on the race bike. A few fractures and broken sternum. Time for a bike upgrade. But no. Nationals for me 🙁 . So beware silver grey Mercedes ML's around Chertsey.

Rode across the mini roundabout and the guy turned into me. Police are checking local cctv for the car. I suspect it will turn up. Obviosly never noticed my white jersey, bright helmet AND flashing front light. Leaving the scene was disgraceful. Following cars were wonderful.

Not seen the bike yet, but "smashed to pieces" was all I remember. Glad I left the Defy at home to be honest.

Chest drain out tomorrow, wrist cast and I'm out of here!

Hope you get out tomorrow and the police follow this up. Hit and run is disgraceful . If they bother there will be alot of CCTV and traffic cams with NPR data available to them . Just take a few hours for a trawl of local area cams..

Get on the turbo and plug in some miles when you are up to it, but not too soon , oh and sleep lots, speeds recovery aparently

What is it with hit and run - are they just not man enough to take responsibility for hurting someone?
Heal quickly and glad you're not too badly hurt OP. Really hope they find and jail the driver!

Bloody hell 😯

That's proper shit that.

I'm glad to hear you are ok though, jeeeeze... I expect they'll be caught soon enough, not like there aren't enough CCTV around there so at least that'll be sorted.

Whilst recovering I'd start planning what bike to get next... Another Propel ?? Canyon Aeroroad ? ?

Propel Advanced SL next. Was going to be my second cat bonus but that looks like it won't be happening this season!

Glad it wasn't the Defy because that bike now can't be replaced. I do like the Canyon, but the club are sponsored by Giant so I should get a good deal.

Still incredulous that the driver sped off! Last thing I remember was "Mercedes ML - my mum's old car! Going to hurt!"

Not that common these days, so I hope they find the <expletive deleted>.

Feeling a bit better this morning after a much better night. Thanks for all your kind words.

Daren

PS I may not be riding for a while, but I can still coach!

I believe the usual form is for the owner of the car to report it stolen but only reliasing it was missing many hours after the accident. 👿

Imo the paper/police are being a bit lame just saying you are 'expected to make a full recovery'. Whilst i am sure that is true and am glad to hear it, I would be reporting the impact on you of several nights in hospital, many fractures and the amount if time off work this cretin has cost your employer (and you if you are self employed or are on any form of bonus or regular overtime. As well as the cost to the taxpayer of the subsequent police investigation.

TiRed, hope you are doing ok considering and that recovery is speedy. Crap time of year for it to happen too, not that there's ever a good time for that sort of thing 🙁

Get well soon chap. I know the roundabout well, I used to live about 100 yards away. The roundabout is notorious for accidents, in the time we lived there there were too many to recall.

Might be worth speaking to the petrol station up the road, I know they have pretty good CCTV due to a number of incidents that took place there.

Very nasty. I hope you get better soon and they catch the driver. Just an aside. How come they took you to St George's not St Peters since you were in Chertsey

St George's is a specialist trauma / head injuries unit. Report said air ambulance attended, whether TiRed got a ride in it and if so if he remembers it, is not covered.

I was unconscious for quite a while and the air ambulance doctor decided I might need the specialist trauma unit. As it turned out, I didn't. Think the nationals are six weeks away? Can you race in a cast?

healing vibes. You can race in a cast if your doctor says it's ok, or if you ignore your doctors advice (and the race official lets you), I recall someone having a cast shaped to fit their bars at one race? Have they put a cast on your sternum, didn;t imagine they do that?!

I raced a duathlon a couple of years ago with a broken arm in a cast 😀 I did fall off over some speed bumps though as it wasn't very easy to hold on....

Hope you heal up well.

Get well soon. We are about the same age and I missed the masters nationals in 2012 when I broke my arm a week before the race.

I work in Chertsey and I have never liked those mini roundabouts. Well I have never liked ANY mini roundabouts!

I hope you mend quickly and they catch the 'beep' who put you in this state.

Reading through the article, it just gives a quick summary. As mentioned above, people need to know the full consequences of their actions.

It's good that you are staying positive and looking towards the future.

Leaving the scene, should get a lot more than that!

Assume there's no way he could claim he didn't realised there'd been a collision?

Not with the impact I made. Or the absence of a wing mirror. Hope there is enough of my blood and Propel to nail him.

Severity of injuries means the police will press cps for maximum penalty. But it is early days...

Again, healing vibes dude! I hope the horrible ****er goes down. At least you're going to get some new shiny, that Propel was a couple of years old now wasn't it 😉 pretty sure you can't get those wheels anymore either so you'll have to be reimbursed with full carbon!

Good news and I hope you are healing well. Get a solicitor and sue him for damages inc personal injury and missing out on the events you'll now miss due to the time off recovering.

I'm ok. Better than I could have been. Chest drain out today, home tomorrow. Everything from the chest down is fine, so it's a question of wrist weight bearing and lung capacity. Top ribs don't seem to hurt as much as bottom ribs.

As for the propel. What a bike, I've loved it, raced it 30 times. It's comfortable, stiff and very fast. The wheels are a good compromise, aero and reasonably light, with alloy breaking. My only problem will be finding another Medium. They are very popular for a reason.

It is a perfect complement to the Defy, which is exactly why I bought it. And the next one must be red!!!

On the mend... A week at home taking it easy looking at replacement bikes. Discharged from MaxFac care on Thursday with my good looks still in tact(ish) and a slightly modified bite. Police statement this week, followed by fracture clinic and perhaps a little recovery level effort on the turbo. Located a very nice Propel SL in a German ebay store...

Nationals are four weeks today...

Mend up well.
If its any consolation I was very well £££ looked after when I was a victim of hit and run.
I remember thinking, its not the damaged body and bike, but all that hard work 'you' had put in.
Get well and come back strong.

Old pre disc Defy SL?.....nice

Back on the horse 😀

OK it was on a turbo, but nine minutes of Zone 5 action just to get the blood pumping in a one hour pyramid. Felt great. Of course I can't use my right hand for much, so hello TT bike and hello to the real darkside commuter 😈 . Bought the replacement Propel too. Much speedy whiteness but I don't think Marcel needs to worry too much.

And in other news...

This is just back from Surrey Police

The reason I have it back is because the driver pleaded GUILTY to failing to stop at an accident and failing to report an accident. Sentencing is next week.

As for the damage, well the wheels are still true, the frame looks OK (some of the scratches are for paint sampling). The bars are of course a write off (loved those Ritchey Streem), but they must have saved my wrist further injury. The forks, well not the first pair to see snapped there.

Raced to no acclaim in the Hillingdon vets E1234 tonight on it s shiny white successor.

Severity of injuries means the police will press cps for maximum penalty

In my opinion that really shouldn't make any difference. A few scratches or left for dead - if they don't stop they don't know. They've shown themselve unfit to be driving a car - should be automatic loss of licence for hit and run.

I always though knives should be blade down?

Only in the dishwasher 😉

I shall race the Surrey League Team Time Trial on these wheels on Saturday as they are: a) still round, b) aero enough, c) will take a 9 speed cassette, d) are clinchers and I can switch to 25c, e) are less fragile than my vintage Zipp 440s.

Will touch up the Giant logo where forensics took pain samples (to identify on the car) and look for some new Propel forks.

The full story does not cover the driver in glory (in fact there was considerable deceit involved), and I'm pleased with the outcome. And it were the stickers in the windscreen that dunnit 😀 Conclusive CCV proof that it was the car in the absence of clear number plate and driver ID.

"the driver pleaded GUILTY to failing to stop at an accident and failing to report an accident. Sentencing is next week."

I would have expected also either careless driving, dangerous driving or causing serious injury by careless driving. Was the driver charged with any of those?

Clever on the drivers part...
33% discount on fine for an early guilty plea. If the charge is only leaving the scene I'd be amazed if it was more than a couple of hundred pounds and a few points.

Charges were leaving the scene and also failure to report. Community Service will be the sentence, plus points and a fine. That's in lieu of a custodial sentence. The driver will have a criminal record and has (apparently) lost their job.

Well, well you have the bike back..

I'd be inclined to make a project out of it.. Try SS'ing it or changing the position radically..

Make it so much more different than the new shiny bike..

Glad it's working out for you now, horrible few months dispersing fast..

I'd be inclined to make a project out of it.

It's probably going to Teen 1 in lieu of his CAAD8 which I use for winter duties. The only damage to the frame is removal of the top coat behind the head tube. The logo damage was paint removal for forensics and I'm already good at touching that up after a race pile up! I'm chasing some new forks and bars at the moment from another written-off Propel frame.

Is the story published yet or just what you've been told

I'll give more details of the case after sentence next Wednesday.

"The only visible damage to the frame is removal of the top coat behind the head tube."

FTFY.

Obviously I don't know the exact manner of the collision, but if it was hit with enough force to do that to the bars and the fork…
