Quick question really: if it's not marked on the front mech, can you tell which is the high and which is the low limit screw?

I have an old, old rigid MTB for commuting with 3 cogs up front, and the chain falls onto the smallest ring when I change down from the big cog (intending to get to the middle ring). A minor irritation, but I was wondering if playing with the limit screws would help. And I don't want to mess with them if I don't know which is which!

Should be able to see the base of the screw against a metal finger within the mech itself. If it's not touching it then it'll be close to it and a lot closer than the other one.

Your low limit is normally nearest the seat tube

The limit screws control the ends of travel for the mech. So I don't think they will help with your problem.

It sounds like you need to tighten/loosen the cable (can't remember which). There should be a adjuster on the shifter. Turn it slightly and experiment.

Thanks Taff and Matthew.

Weirdly, for a girl, I quite enjoy fettling things on the bike. My boyfriend thinks I'm mad. And I quite often make things worse than they were. Ho hum. Off to tinker now...

Have a gander at you tube for front mech set up. It's amillion times better watching it being down than described
