Hey, you! Got a Shimano road mech? Got a tape measure?

If you can answer ‘Yes’ to the above, then you could be my saviour!

I’ll tone down the drama now… a little project I have on the go involves converting a GX AXS mech to work seamlessly with a 11-30 road cassette. I figure as the cage is designed to work with a 10-52 cassette, its dimensions could be reduced, but I’m wondering by how much.

So how can you help? If you have the above mech and measurer, could you let me know the distance between the jockey wheel axles, and how far the top one is from where it pivots at (bolts to) the mech body, if you see what I mean, I would be eternally grateful!

Not entirely sure I’ve understood the second measurement you were after

105 r7000 GS cage 87/88mm between jockey wheel axles (this info is often on sjs's web site or Shimano tech docs. Not sure which other measurement you mean. The top jockey wheel is inline with the bolt that holds the cage to the mech body (B knuckle?). Perhaps a picture with annotation would clear it up.

Would it not be easier to use a axs road mech?

The 40mm in the above picture varies depending on mounting and mechs current extension.

Not really, as they dont have the mechanism that moves it out the way if/when it gets thunked off rocks.

i would use a GX/X01 DH cage, but thats a bit small, and needs to be modified to fit anyway, plus are silly money.

But that's the bit that's not in a fixed position, it moves with the parallelogram. And if presume that you'd want purple to blue not red to blue?  My cage (jockey to jockey) is 60mm too PXL_20250122_103535072~2

This is 0mm, really as it bolts to the mech body at the same point.

Palms up shrugging emoji. Question mark.

Aye it's inline on Shim (road at least). There's no step as per OP's example pic.
