[#10414318]

Got a pass to ride on Wednesday, not been out for ages. Mountain forecast looks good so I'm thinking Helvellyn (had a major mechanical earlier in the year that cut the last attempt short!) Will probably do up Keppel, down Birkside then up and over Sticks (I've only ever done Sticks before.)

Any reason not to do it?

Will it be too busy with walkers? Will it be too cold!?

It probably will be fairly busy, but tbh it always is. Sounds a good plan, have fun mate.

I'd come with you but I've got to take the wife to the docs.
Have fun (?)

No snow to speak of at all yet this year, should be great. If you've done sticks I'd consider riding up Dunmail from the bottom of birkside and either returning to Patterdale via Grisedale Tarn, or continuing back up to the top from the tarn (big slog up).

That steep rocky bit in the middle of birkside might be a tadge icy, as it doesn’t get much sun. But otherwise all good. Should be a great ride.

Have fun!

But renegotiate with your power base with yer missus - you shouldn't *need* "a pass".

I've been up dollywagon before so I have thought that heading back to Patterdale that way looks decent. Which way exactly do you mean to get back over from Thirlmere? I can't see a bridleway at Dunmail on the OS map.

Is the climb back up to sticks from thirlmere acceptable? Not done that before either.

The footpath up the beck to grisedale tarn. You’ll be pushing/carrying most of it so no ‘legality’ issues if that bothers you. The carry up sticks is a bugger, and you start lower/finish higher than the grisedale tarn option.

Edit- just checked the map, the path to grisedale tarn up raise beck isn’t a FP, just a dotted black line, it’s really obvious on the ground up the right bank of the beck looking uphill.

Just got back. Chickened out and cut it short so just did the summit then sticks and seldom seen (which I've not done before.) I think if I'd dobe the full day I would've got too cold (couldn't feel my fingers at the bottom of lower man) plus I'm pretty unfit at the moment.

Seldom seen is pretty spectacular but I got to admit it's pushing my skill/bravery level too far! I could probably ride the trail, but it's pretty high consequence in places and the thought of just clipping a pedal or something means there was a lot of gingerly walking down!

Had a lot of the old favourites today, "how much is your bike worth?" "You must be mad!" "Taking your bike for a walk mate?" "You always ride alone!?" Rude. 😜

Met a fellow STWer too, didn't get your name mate but it was good to meet you!

My favourite descent off Helvellyn is Seldom rarely see any walkers on it, never been down on my own so can understand the consequences you talk about 🙂 I,m ok with exposure on my left, I struggle with it on my right due to poor sight in my left eye 🙂

I took my 10 year old lad up honister and along the bash route to grange for the first time, beautiful weather and he made he whole castle crag descent without dabbing-I was gobsmacked, don’t think I managed that the first time I rode it! Glad you enjoyed Helvellyn.

I walked Scafell Pike today from Great Dungeon Ghyll, know what you mean about the cold! Planning on doing the Borrowdale Bash tomorrow before I head home.

Good views of Ullswater on the way back down.

Yeah it was mint out today. Cold, but even at the summit it was almost completely still.
