Recently I bought a new Shimano 105 5800 Chainset (Silver 53/39 x 172.5mm).
I went to install it as a single chain ring by removing the inner ring and leaving the outer one. I've done this countless times before. However it looks like this iteration of the 105 chainset doesn't have the conventional chain ring bolts. The outer ring seems to have the sleeve of the chain ring bolt built into it.
Thus instead of my own narrow chain ring bolts being the solution it needs some sort of washer.
Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
Google Chainring Bolt Washers - loads of them out there
deleted - misread the OP
If you'll be sticking to the standard 53t chainring and not changing to a narrow / wide set up. Can't you just remove the front mech and add a clutch mech? Leave the small chainring there but just don't use it?
the chainring is more important in retention than a clutch mech IME. Must admit I'm curious as to why you want to do it this way OP? Chainrings built for shifting tend to shift the chain off themselves at inopportune moments without something to constrain them - such as a front mech...
As a road 1x11 rider for five years I’ve played with loads of options.
in my experience a narrow wide chainring is a must. Clutch mechs are nice to have but not essential.
id you don’t buy a new chainring I’d leave the mech and other chainring on.
