Anyone got any experience with the Alex chosen hubs Merlin uses? Trying to change the rear hub axle end cap and for the life of me can't get the drive side one off. Any hints? I tried brute force and also drifting it out using a 142 X 12 axle from the opposite side. Bit nary a smidge of movement.
Help!
Are there any spanner flats on one end cap? Or if you look inside the axle/qr hole is it a hex shape? If you have either then it'll be screw on.
It does appear to have a hex shape I'm the end but no spanner flats. But trying that just makes the axle turn but not unscrew? Am I missing a trick?

Their end cap on this page shows a internal hex shape.
Btw it's choosen hubs and Alex rims.
Yeah you need to clamp the other end to stop movement. Either use soft vice jaws, or axle vice jaws or a strap wrench. You can use pliers or molegrips but it will make a mess of the other end cap.
Ah Cheers for that. Hmmm it definitely appears ok need to screw it off then. Although without the whole thing spinning I don't quite get it ๐
Righty ho. Cheers guys. Hopefully next post will be a success.
So that was successful but now appear to have a new probelm ๐ย Frame (new BFe) has a syntace x12 rear axle which I assumed was a simple screw in job. Apart from the fact I can't? 4mm Allen key too small but 5mm too big?
Well, you can buy a 4.5mm, odd size though.
Pretty sure x-12 is one of those, 5mm iirc. They sell an Allen key you store in the axle and the two sizes on it are 4mm and 5mm.ย https://www.syntace.com/index.cfm?pid=3&pk=2601 that indicates 5mm for the axle.
Dammit. Looks like for whatever reason I might have a dodgy axle then as 5mm just won't slide in. Monday morning phone call time and see if I can get one sent. Thanks for all the help
Sure you probably are but you are trying on the disc side not the driver side?
