Afternoon,
I wonder if anyone can help a relatively inexperienced MTB'er with a slight sticking problem.
At the beginning of last year I purchased a Cannondale Trail 6 29er through the cycle to work scheme my firm were partaking in. I wanted a trail bike to get out and muddy and ride with some friends at work. Due to an unexpected house move, about a month after I collected the bike it ended up in storage and hasn't come out until a fortnight ago......the shame of it!!!!
Anyway the bike has NEVER been ridden and is as new however the rear disc (Decipher Promax) is almost permanently on meaning the wheel doesn't spin freely? I am leather to take it into a local shop to have it looked at when I have a feeling it might be something simple that I can resolve with some advice.
Can anyone advise how to tackle this and how I could free up the wheel so I can get out on the bike???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Si
Sounds like for whatever reason the pistons on the brake caliper have moved in slightly & so the pads are clamping the back wheel.
This often happens if the wheel is taken out of the bike & the brake lever is pressed inadvertently, although it can 'just happen' as well sometimes...
Best thing to do is take the wheel out & use something to pry the pads apart to push the pistons back into the caliper. You should be able to see before you do this, whether the pistons are poking out a little bit.
Normally I would say replace the pads with some old ones to avoid damaging the good ones, but from the sound of it you won't have a spare set of old pads to use....?
Use something soft-ish like a tyre lever to pry the pads apart, to minimise any damage to the pads themselves.
It might be worth checking the alignment of the caliper to the disc at the same time. The disc should be centrally located between the pads.
Just standing the bike upright, releasing the QR and re-tightening might allow the axle to settle properly in the droputs and free the disc.
