I have a 2007 stumpy fsr, when i try to pedal its as though the gears are slipping & i get no forward motion. I have replaced freehub, gear cable & chain but its still doing it, my chain is also catching the mech hanger and if i move the limiter it just moves up a gear. Help me please singletrack your my only hope(either that or i'll need to take it to bikeshop)

Sounds like you need a new cassette, but before spending that sort of money I'd say take it to the bike shop. From what you describe it *sounds* like a new cassette would sort it, but better to get the opinion of someone who's actually sat on it and had a go and knows their stuff before you spend the money on one.

i agree with rolfharris get it looked it, either new chainrings or cassette should sort it plus bike shop should be able tune your gears to perfection.

Are you sure the cassette is on properly... maybe the locking ring is threaded.

How worn are the drivetrain components? Any obvious hooking on any of the teeth, or worse still, sharkfin shaped teeth? If you renew different parts of the system at different times it can lead to trouble, esp a new chain on an old cassette as the individual components take time to 'wear into' each other. Unfortunately this doesn't happen properly until the chain has 'stretched' (i.e. worn) sufficiently to allow the rollers to sit snugly at the base of between the teeth of the gears.

Do you still have the old chain? I suggest you put it back on the bike, put the bike into the big ring at the front and go for a spin. Does it slip when you are gently pedalling? Only sligtly, if at all? And what about when you put the hammer down? Big time? If it is slipping in these conditions I suggest that you need a new cassette. If it wasn't slipping in the way you describe with the old chain on then it is possibly an indexing issue, but as suggested above without a good look-see it is hard to tell.

Oh, and if it's not the cassette it'll be chainrings.

Obvious one...did you replace the chain and keep your old cassette? If so I'd more or less guarantee that being your problem.

cassette looks fine no real wear as far as i can see, had the cassette of when i replaced freehub it went back on ok & does the lockring not just stop the cassette falling off?
when it happens the chain & the cassette dont seem to move even though pedals move

Check to see if the hanger is bent too.

When you changed the freehub did you put too much grease in there and the pawls are not engaging.? Clean out all the grease if you did and try again...

A worn out cassette hardly looks worn. New chain on an old cassette is a recipe for slipping.

Probably a real daft one, are you mixing SRAM with Shimano? that could be an issue!
