Help me STW... you're my only hope

My drivetrain is pretty nackered so I'm replacing everything. I've got a new bottom bracket, cassette, chain and rear mech ready to go on, but I can't seem to find a replacement chainring anywhere.

Its quite obscure. I need a single narrow/wide (Megatooth as FSA call it) ring for a set of FSA K-Force BB30 carbon cranks. Its a 3 bolt, 86bcd and it appears to be completely unavailable anywhere. There are loads of the double 40/28 rings available, but the single ones seem to be like the proverbial rocking horse poo

I've found one on ebay in the states, but with shipping It'd be cheaper buying a new crankset and probably take a month to get here. I'm loath to junk a perfectly decent set of carbon cranks and the choice of cranksets available for BB30 frames is hardly inspiring

It looks like this...

FSA-narrow-wide-drop-stem-2

Any suggestions oh wise ones?

Can help with the chain ring but I have some new and some slightly used SRAM X01 carbon cranks BB30 in the garage loft if you don't get sorted.

Thanks @Tracey. If I can’t get a chain ring sorted today then I’m admitting defeat and I’ll message you later about the cranks

In the meantime, I’m off out on the hardtail with Binnerette number two and my mum on her E-bike 😃

OK. Won't be wanting an arm and a leg for them

Have a great day on the trails. No riding today as I'm in Manchester supporting the eldest in some Crossfit competition

Probably the same one you already found...

Speak to Windwave who are FSA's UK importer

They may have some in stock/tucked away in a corner somewhere

Good luck 👍 I think I found the only XT 10 speed outer ring in existence as they've been discontinued 😔 It's coming from Taiwan and costing £57 😳Just replaced the inner and found I don't really need the outer now but I'm inclined to hang on to it when it comes!

Give Spa Cycles a call.  I was really struggling to replace my chain rings on the Vagabond. Called in the LBS but they couldn't help. John at Spa cycles sorted it - PoP.

Thanks for the words of wisdom all. You’re as dependable as ever.

I’ll give some of the places mentioned a call, as it just seems mad to bin a pair of perfectly serviceable carbon cranks for the want of a chainring (though that sort of stands as a metaphor for the modern bike industry). If no joy then I’ll get those off Tracey and banish the other cranks to the parts graveyard in the shed

@oldfart - I wish you’d have put a post up like this one. I’ve got a brand new spare one still in the packaging in the shed

@binners I did , earlier this week, When did obsolete chainrings become so spendy , probably on page 2 by now . Yours needs to be for an M785 chainset and crucially 40T AJ , if it is PM me , I can return the one I've ordered if necessary depending on how much it will cost .

@oldfart sorry I missed the post. I’m pretty certain that’s what it is. I need to have a rummage around in the shed tomorrow so I’ll dig it out and check, then drop you a message

Is this the right one? In Europe though, so you might have to buy some other stuff to get over the €135 limit

@oldfart - I’ve dug it out and it nearly fits the bill. It’s a 38 tooth, not 40 but if you want it, it’s yours. Drop me a message and I’ll get it to you. Otherwise it’ll just sit in my shed until the end of time. You will not believe the shit I’ve got in there. Actually.., everyone in here will believe it, because no doubt they’ve got exactly the same 😂

@cookeaa - thanks for the link. I've ordered that one from Amazon in the states. It was the last one they had, so possibly the last one anywhere in the world. Express postatge was 8 quid and it should be here in 3 days, so 50 quid in all. Cheaper than a new set of cranks

Thanks for the replies everyone. Thanks for the offer of the cranks @Tracey but it looks like these ones will be still be turning yet 🙂

@binners & @oldfart I've got an unused 40t that I'd be happy to swap for the 38t if we could arrange some sort of switcheroo 🤔

@Dickyboy - if it’s any use to you, you’re welcome to it. Better than it being sat in my shed forever

You’ve got to love this place! My chainring (which @cookeaa found for me) just landed from the states, Dickyboy has got the 38 tooth I sent to him and Oldfart has got the 40 tooth that Dickyboy sent to him

All is at one with the world once more 😃

Thats great news. This is one of the many reasons that this site in whatever format needs to survive.

Was going to say it's got to be FSA. Won't touch-em with a barge pole!

I helped a mate spec a custom build a few years back. The only thing he speced himself was FSA cranks, cheap off fleabay (facepalm) I said to him, just look up the cost of replacement chainrings! At the time you could buy a whole Shimano crankset for the same price as one NW chainring and replacement NW chainrings could be as low as eight quid for Shimano 104 BCD!

Yikes! Hope it works out now.

I'm surprised those cranks don't have a removable spider TBH, that means someone at FSA (SRAM) Okayed the tooling for an OEM product with a proprietary interface that got retired within a about year because loads of MTB stuff became direct mount shortly thereafter, Such a waste.
