[Closed] Helmet Lifting At Speed

Riding this afternoon I hit 49.8mph on a steep fairly rough but straight off-road trail. At that speed my helmet, a bell stoker 2017 was trying to lift off my head. It was tipping backwards and tugging at the straps. I guess it’s the peak causing it but I have never experienced it before in peaked helmets. I usually wear fox off road and Met on road. I have done over 60mph in my met and never had a problem but it has no peak. I checked the rear adjustment dial tension and It was fine. Not too loose not too tight.

Anyone else hade this?

I had it ski ing once, but I think it was due to a badly fitting helmet. Could it be a combination of your speed and wind direction on this occasion?

Wrong shape helmet.

Will stop happening at 49.9 mph.

I wouldn’t worry too much until you hit 88mph, then things can get weird.

Basically 50mph off road? I can’t imagine that - even on a fire road that would be sketchy. Most I’ve got to is 49.1mph on a road bike on a very big smooth downhill section of road. That felt more than dangerous / sketchy enough to me.

took my floro giro hex when went on a week long mostly road tour as quite like the way stands out in traffic (not that I watch myself but when driving I've seen people with floro helmets when body is masked by cars).....but every downhill it was a piece of crap lifting off my head and banging around on it and  did zero for concentration - ok so maybe not quite the intended use but would have thought possible to eliminate  .... gone and bought a proper fluro roadie helmet

If you must insist on riding a motorbike off road then wear a proper helmet.

The ride was over the top of the Malvern hills so any locals will know it’s fairly easy to get to 50. Long straight fairly steep downhills.

On difference today was that I was wearing a castelli thermo headband which did make the helmet feel different.

Actually 50 is easily doable. I was doing just under in the Alps in Summer down a blue piste, and my lad blasted past me.

Self propelled or chipped e bike?

I didn’t read the OP properly, missed the off road bit, is it hard to keep control over the bumps at that speed?

We were both on Capras down a loose stone fire road, they were moving around a bit but not too sketchy. My lad is 17 so has no fear yet. I reckon he would have hit maybe up to 52mph

The fastest I’ve been on a bike is an indicated 47mph down a steep and twisty hill on road, that was more than enough for me!

Out of interest what gearing is the OP using to reach nearly 50 mph?

For me it was 42t chain ring, pedal furiously until I couldnt spin any faster with gravity helping. This was our faster speed not average and I don’t know how accurate the speedo was.

-20% would give 37.6 mph. I am pretty sure it was closer to the 47 though.

42 x 11 gives 30.4 mph at 110 cadence.

What gearing do toboggans use to hit the speeds they do?

That particular one is a mega long blue piste (1a below)

It’s not very steep except for a few little bits.

We were probably over 40mph for most of it, but up to speed pretty quickly with much pedalling.

The Strava average above includes riding on some slower stuff higher up the mountain

Adjust your saddle angle maybe try a tighter undershort?

Looking at the pic of your chart, over 40 was about 0.1-2 mile with the vast majority under 30mph??

True, the 40+ section must be one of the little steeper bits on the piste, still not that steep though so I’ve no problems believing the OP if he was on reasonably steep fire road.

This is it
