i stripped the thread in my crank a while back and a local shop managed to get the pedal back on with a hellicoil (i think?)
only thing is, said pedal is now broken on one side (LX SPD). its still usable, but a bit annoying. I tried repairing in in situ, but thats not happening so it needs to come off really, but its a bit stiff, and before I force it, i wanted to know whether a new pedal would go on, or is a helicoil a fit and forget thing that you leave in? I don't want to wrek my bike anymore, but i would like to be able to clip in on both sides!
It should be fine if they fitted it properly with bearing fit / threadlock and greased the pedal / helicoil thread. If the helicoil comes out with the pedal, fit a new helicoil and do the above .
AFAIK a helicoil should work like a normal thread?
that's good, i'll take it off then! If only I could find m missing SPD shoe now! (who loses a shoe?)
drunk people, I always see odd shoes on top of bus shelters.
As above, properly fitted coil should work fine. I have 4 in the exhaust side of my engine head and they have been fine with repeated re-use despite very high temps and stiffness. Never used bearing stuff though, they gripped just fine without.
The problem might be that it will not be a Helicoil but a taperfit bush / insert.
These are the common method of crank thread repair: Cyclus, Weldtite and Var.
It is possible that the bush will come out with the pedal.
But if it does stay on the old pedal, it just means that you get another bush or carefully take the old bush off the pedal and reuse.
