I am building a bike for the good lady nothing fancy I striped a fork from another frame its a 1/18 top and bottom when i insert it and do up the star nut there is no free movement the fork is stiff left to right could the bottom crown race be the culprit are they specific to a headset ?

never had it happen before and changed loads of forks from one frame to another.

Usually specific to headset.

Yeah, crown races can differ considerably.

By the way, does she know you refer to her as "the good lady nothing fancy"?

I had this a while ago and it was the crown race. I had a hope headset and didn't have the hope crown race. Fitted one and it was perfect straight away even though the old one seemed to fit the lower headset race perfect, but when tightened up it just bound up.

Has same issues here. Wrong crown race caused binding at the worst possible times!

All the best

As above, it's most likely the crown race (assuming that all the headset internals are installed correctly) but I did have a similar problem with a frame where the headset cups weren't quite seated squarely.
