Hi, as title really, is there anyone in Hebden Bridge or surroundings who would be happy to borrow their (self-made) headset press to me, and possibly a headset cup remover. I know both are not hard to assemble from simple bits from the hardware store, but I just need to press two headsets in this weekend, and hopefulle won't need the tool for another while.
Thanks, Sven

If you're in Hebden Bridge, have the lads at the STW office not got the tools you require? It's only down the valley in Todmorden

why does it have to be home made?

It certainly does not have to be a home-made one, I thouhgt my chances of finding a home-made one are higher, but if you have a 'professional' headset press happy to lend to me, I would take either.
STW is probably closed at the weekends, not sure whether they want to give out tools anyway. I just thought there must be a few cyclist in Hebden/Todmorden who have a headset press...
Thanks

I don't think anyone's around this weekend, but if you're around before we all go home tonight, or on Monday, then you might as well bring your bike round and we can do it while you wait. It'll only cost you some Jaffa Cakes.

I've used two blocks of wood and a club hammer. I've done this twice now.

Sounds brutal and clumsy, but it actually works like a charm.

You need an assistant to hold the frame, and something solid (concrete) as a base. If you use something flimsy then it doesn't work nearly as well.

Your assistant holds the frame. Put the blocks of wood in the obvious places. Hit with hammer reasonably hard (but you don't need to go mad). Check by eye that the headset is aligned (it won't be to start out). Adjust next hammer blow accordingly. Repeat until headset is inserted.

Wow, a reply form Chipps himself, thanks for the offer, as much as I would like to come along at some point, I suppose I am not around while you are at work and vice versa. Thanks anyway.

nigew: Thanks for that, I'll contact you on Monday if I haven't sorted it by then. CVS didn't even have threaded rods last weekend, I haven't come across Bonsalls as yet...

I sent an eMail to you, ChatsworthMusters, thanks!

I used a hammer and wood in the past, too, but now splashed out on a Hope headset, so I wanted to go the safer way, and most of my tools, incl. vice, are still in storage in Northumberland, so can't get them any time soon....
