.....putting a hyperlink in one mtb forum's 'organise a ride' section to another mtb forum's Thursday night ride page?
The mods have deleted it, and then deleted my sarcastic response to the deletion. Neither are mainstream mtb sites and I have no affiliation with either, other than riding with people off both.
Seems an odd policy to me, am I alone in thinking this?

The reaction to what you did is surely the only answer required. Though I'd think hard about whether you actually want to be a member of forums with such people in charge (I'm assuming it's not here!)
Seems like what you did was fair enough...so long as the forums aren't two rival bike shops or something!
They don't want you to steer traffic away from their site.
The same way several forums ban eBay ad links - why be a linking directory / launch pad for someone else?
