Just fitted an HTII bottom bracket, just a basic shimano bb-51.

Fitted it as you do, drive side cup, then non-drive side. All fine so far. Used the old spacers to make sure it was all the right size and stuff.

Anyway, as I put the chainset through and gave it the tap, it popped out a plastic cap on the none drive side.
It's the bit that goes between the crank and the BB cup.

I can't get it back in.

Why has that popped out?
Have I broken it?

It's annoying when that happens, but it doesn't seem to actually do any harm if you just push it back in (not tried hot water though; that's a good idea).

Or maybe it kills it slowly, after about 5 months, in which case tomorrow it will stop working.

Boil kettle, wait 30 secs, pour into cup or bowl, 30 secs till pliable, out, pop back in...job done.
