[Closed] Has the Forum Upgrade Killed Long Illustrated Story Threads?

There used to be many long threads on STW with loads of detail and pictures. MOAB did some excellent ones on his family trips and PostieRich posted some crackers. There were also plenty of blow by blow accounts of building bikes and converting vans for people more interested in stuff than actual riding.

But there seems to be loads less of them these days, and after finally summoning the energy after three months, to post my Finale epic, I can fully see why.

Whaddaya think...... is it still worth tbe effort?

It's just as simple to do as it ever was so I don't think it's down to that.

I've had a long running T-130 thread but mostly it's peaked because the bike just works and does exactly what it should.... so it's been quiet.

I've also had the Zwift thread, my pride and joy...

I'm not sure it's the forum upgrade.

I'm still seeing those sort of threads on other forums.

It's the comments that keep threads alive here, and because a story thread isn't really a discussion thread, it's lot of work to go to for something that will disappear very quickly in the grey porridge of the forum.

Maybe STW needs a category for them, and probably should encourage the posters of the better ones to turn it into a STW article, or maybe for events like the HT550 amalgamate the threads into an article curated by STW, eg the StrathPuffer is this weekend, and there will be a lot of content that can be generated from that, but it's probably too late.

Otherwise they're losing good content matter to FaceBook groups and other specialised forums.

I wrote a thread last year about a tour of the Baltic states that I did, with loads of photos in it. Because of the length of it, I found it easier to write it in word then copy it in. It ended up full of the <script> crap and none of the pictures showed because of that. It was a waste of time, so I'll not bother again. I did my 2018 mountain thread because it's a tradition but it was a bloody faff.

I'd say an abyssmal search function has as much to do with it although if you use the one that works it's been a lot better recently. See also automatically locking threads after a year unless bumped.

Scrap that, the other one works as well now except it searches the site as opposed to the forum. Really showing the bodged togetherness although hopefully this means it'll eventually get tied together at some point.

There has been goid ones but its a bit of a chore to read someof them what would be good though is a place for gpx files of rides so you don't end up with twenty People asking for it.
