Shitpost, so feel free to ignore.
Have been tinkering with, building and rebuilding a CX / Gravel / Winter trainer for the last few months, based on a 2012 Boardman CX Team frameset.
Stans Grail on 240s
Hy:rds
FSA K-Force bars
Easton EC90 post
Prologo Zero II nack
Rival 10s Carbon Levers / GX 10 Type 2 Mech / XT 11-36
Ultegra crank with a superstar 42t NW
Conti 28C GP4seasons.
Weighing it in at 23.2lbs.
I swear I have barely lighter parts on my road race bike and that comes in under UCI race weight.
Are these boardman frames made of ****ing pig iron?
No,you're supposed to cast off the anchor.
I swear I have barely lighter parts on my road race bike and that comes in under UCI race weight.
Either you're underestimating your road bikes weight, or you're under estimating that lists of parts added weight. There's a lot on that list that's not light though.
Stans Grail on 240s - that's 200g heavier than stans road rims, and depends on the number of spokes
Hy:rds - 100g + extra cable
FSA K-Force bars - nice but not that light
Easton EC90 post - nice but not that light
Prologo Zero II nack - nice but not that light
Rival 10s Carbon Levers / GX 10 Type 2 Mech / XT 11-36 - The GX mech +100g and cassette +150g
Ultegra crank with a superstar 42t NW - OEM ultegra is hollow I think? So that'll be heavier
Conti 28C GP4seasons. - 160g vs 23mm gp4000
+ disc rotors, thick bar tape, pedals, bottle cages, computer mounts and anything else.
And it is a basic/mid range alloy frame Vs presumably something higher end.
I once serviced my friends bike to find 2kg of mud in the seat tube. Might be worth a look?
That frame does weigh the best part of 2kg in size large. The forks though are quite light at 580g ish. Compared to road bikes though, that's a good chunk more.
Hy:rd's and discs and those wheels (probably) will add a lot too compared to road bike.
Can't comment specifically to CX, but I did a hard tail build speccing out every component on a spreadsheet using all the manufacturer published weights for the specific model components I'd bought. Whole thing came out several lbs heavier than I expected.
Wheels (custom build) in particular came out fair bit more, even before fitting tyres, cassette and discs. Rims, hubs, spokes, nipples all accounted for. Though calculation based on published weights was lower than the estimate from DT's own calculator (all DT components). The final build was still a bit higher than that even.
Manufacturer claimed weights in my opinion are a bit dubious at times.
My cx bike weighs just over 27lb,
steel frame, very heavy steel forks, 32 spoke mavic cxp22 on a dmr revolver rr hub and something heavy on the front,
cheapish and heavy post saddle, bars and stem.
disc brakes, cx tyres.
rides really well, but not light, 23lb sounds pretty good to me.
My bottom of the range caadx as standard but with pacenti cl 25 rims and gravel Kings weighs 22lbs. Scales a pretty accurate.. My bling carbon road bike weighs around 16
@the00 was your friend called Mark?
Many moons ago, a guy in the club made such a fuss about 'how light' and special his new bike was - That over the coming months- during tea shop stops, some of the other fellas took to removing his seatpost and ramming large amounts of sod into his frame to continually add weight 😉
Is it the grey Boardman CX frame ? Mines pretty light although I’ve never bothered weighing it.
They are half decent triple butted frames.
Anyhow if your only poncing along doing this gravel riding stuff you don’t need a nice light bike
Buy a Transition Trans AM or Trek Sawyer and ride every day for a month. When you get back on your CX bike it will seem like it is weightless after riding one of them.
I guess my point was that the current Boardman CX Team, with 1X Hydro, non hollow cranks, 2.2kg XC319 wheelset, OEM Aluminium Stem/Bars/Post/Saddle, pub pedals and a set of rapid robs comes in at 22lbs.
How can I be heavier than that with a 1500g wheelset and a bucket of good quality carbon on there?
This frame must be like 3kg all up.
Time to get on the hunt for a replacement.
Strip it, weigh it
comes in at 22lbs.
Actually weighed on scales? Or just what Boardman says.
Maybe it's time to actually dismantle and check what all the bits weigh. Rather than assuming that because it's carbon/expensive, it's light.
That frame does weigh the best part of 2kg in size large. The forks though are quite light at 580g ish.
Wow, that is heavy. I am riding a steel fixed gear freestyle frame (with gussets etc,.) and steel fork and it doesn't weigh much more than that. Luckily as I don't need gears or brakes the weight is around 19lbs
I once serviced my friends bike to find 2kg of mud in the seat tube
Er, no you didn't. That's the equivalent of 2 bags of sugar worth of mud, how big was this seat tube?....
My CX team specced like this was 24lb:
Thomson bar + mtb stem
Pacenti cl25 rims on Superstar Tesla hubs (about 1750g)
Ashima rotors

Then I bought the Carbon version (CXR 9.4) expecting it to be <19lb. It wasn't. It's 20lb. Still light, but the wheels are 1900g! and apart from the wheels, trying to get it down to 18lb (which was my plan - hoping to add a dropper post and still be 19lb.) would cost a lot.
So Boardman's weights are very optimistic (i.e. lies). I still love how both bikes ride though. I've tested a few others and not enjoyed them as much.
