I'm very tempted by a Scandal 29er for £199.

Not sure whether to go for a slot or geared drop out? I don't think I'll ever go single speed. I'm also not sure if running geared on a slot drop out is as good as running geared on a geared drop out? Thoughts?

Lastly, what you reckon: 29er Scandal for £199?

Unless you hanker after running an Alfine or Rohloff, you would be better with the vertical dropout.

My credit card is twitching. That is quite a deal. Has to be a pink one though.

On-One is due a huge resurgence in cool factor. "I bought one after brant left" will become the thing to say when everyone has a Blue Pig.

😉

What are the disadvantages to running geared on a slot drop out?

Wheel removal must be marginally more annoying? Although that difficulty is made a lot less by having the caliper within the rear triangle.

What are the disadvantages to running geared on a slot drop out?

a slighly more convoluted axle path for wheel removal.

Apart from that, not a lot and you get the benefit of an easy SS tensioning system when you get the urge.

Might be worth just getting the slot drop then.

Pink or Black? (Fnar, Fnar!)

What are the disadvantages to running geared on a slot drop out?

The front mech might catch on the wheel unless you run with chaintugs, pain in the arse to get the wheel out.

Wouldn't you just run the axle at the front of the slot?

DB-No, this will mean the wheel catches on the front mech if running a29er slot with gears, this is what happens with the steel ones and why I now have a scandal for geared duties

My scandal vertical drop out has a 445mm c-c BB to Axle measurement.
Exactly the same as the Ti29er slot drop out (with the axle rammed forwards)
The ti29 does have a bent seat tube to help with mech position/wheel.
And previously I had to mod a dual-pull mech that I used to use on the vert drop out scandal to avoid tyres getting very close to the bottom pull cam arm.

However, I dont think you need to use a chaintug with a slotdrop out normally unless you are using very tall tyres.

MARKENDURO - is it a geared or slot version Scandal you have?

I fancy one, but having contacted On One this afternoon, they only have a slot version in my size (and they are not getting anymore vertical drop out versions back in).

Don't like the sound of the front mech issues, or the idea of the 'getting wheel out' problems.

the getting the wheel out "problem" is overstated.

Its a little bit different.
If you think you might find it a challenge, take up croquet.

Seeing as I do really rather enjoy / love my slidy dropout steel (obviously) Inbred, would I be equally enamoured with a slot dropout Scandal?

I mean; I do like the look of the price (a lot), but scrolling through the 'show us yer steel hardtails' thread makes me appreciate that even cheap steel is really quite nice.

Daft really - according to Planet On One, the Scandal's "supposed" to ride similar to the Inbred, but does it?

What's that song? You know, the one that goes something like "Oh, oh, we're in trouble...."

Just ordered a Scandal and I'm under strict instructions not to get another bike. "Oh, oh, I'm in trouble..."

AB no im just an engineer im afraid i just figure the it wont break stuff out...though i was told to be more of a contact point for questions which is fine....im accused by some US framebuilders for being too secretive and i kind of like it that way !!!

The SCANDAL is OK just like it was intended

I've just replaced my Scandal, it's a nice frame, stupidly light for what it can do. And now stupidly cheap too. I never quite got on with mine, I'm within the recommended sizing for a small, just, but I think it was basically too small despite that. Also, with 130mm in the front the seat tube angle was pretty slack, I was sat a loooooong way back.

Good frames though. I wouldn't have another for 130mm use but if I wanted a light 100mm frame, I'd get one like a shot. Possible in big gay pink. Definately not in 16" though!

So, this Top Sekrit new frame, I take it that rather than having a racy 100mm frame that everyone sticks a longer fork in, there's going to be a purpose-built long travel ally hardtail in the range? A 4567046? 🙂

You better hope the pink paint holds on better than the other On One frames! Guess it wont be an issue when it drops off after a few week. Paint it with Tipex it should last longer.

They still do (here) the vertical dropout one, but you'd better need a 16in as the rest have gone.
