So if hope made there trials hub in a boost shell would it be ok for normal mtbing.
The pro4 hub has 44 points of engagement
But the pro4 trials hub has 88 which I imagine would be better. ???
Why no 88t mtb pro4???
A good question!
If they made an 88 PoE hub that was compatible with 11 speed SRAM or Shimano - I'd buy it.
I run one on my deviate guide. As you say, quick engagement and hope reliability.
Not sure if you could butcher one to put a cassette on it tho.
That is a good question, why less poe on the standard hub? ย I already use the trials/single speed hub on one of my gearbox bikes (using the 142mm kit) and use it for normal MTBing
I used to run a Hope Trials hub (of the old 48 POE variety) on my do it all bike, with a custom 6 speed cassette... I remember farting about with the ratios, adding a MASSIVE 30T cog on the back to give me a better climbing gear to do my MBL.
The main reason was cos I wanted a dishless wheel (something 150/157mm hubs have had since way back before BOOST bollocks came on the scene) allowing me to fart about with 360 bunnyhop attempts and suchlike without having to true my wheel every 5 mins.
Led to believe that since there's more gears on offer these days, you may be able to squeeze a solid 7 cogs em these days, allowing plenty of ratios for all occasions
Oh and since the Hope Singlespeed hub has a steel freehub, you can use cheap cassettes, which are far easier to butcher for that 'check me n my custom gear ratios' vibe
So hope just need to make a boost one.
Come on hope we want 88 because all the frame makers are obsessed with super low bottom brackets.
As per JHJ, I used to run one for a dishless rear wheel. Machined the back of a 9sp cassette to fit 7 cogs on (dropping the 11 and 15t IIRC).
I thought the trials hub had more effective POE because only 2 pawls were engaged at a time. Could be wrong though.
I've been using the old Pro2 Trials hub for about 5 years now and it's been bulletproof.
I had been using the old Jones-style 9 speed 17 - 34 XT carrier and that worked beautifully, but recently I came across a Sunrace 11-40 8 speed cassette, so with a new set of spacers, you can get 13-34 on 9 speed spacing.
