Looks like my bike that was stolen last year has been recovered. I know it is now the insurance co property, can I buy back from them or will they sell it on at an auction house or similar?

Talk to them about it. A friend of mine's insurance company said he could just have it when it happened with him.

Flatback saw his stolen P7 being ridden by a lad who'd bought it from a mate, he re-possessed it, contacted his insurance company (who'd already paid out)and, by all accounts, they had no procedure because it'd never happened previously. They said he may as well keep it.

Bought my Kona Explosif from Bumblebee after it appeared 6 years after it had been stolen.

My hardtail was recovered via Ebay, minus some expensive bits (ck headset and Easton carbon). Original settlement was for £800, I paid the insurance company £50 to keep it. I got the impression they just wanted it off their books (it was March so end of tax year). Frame needed welding though (sliding dropout was trashed) and there was a fair bit of other damage.

imo the insurance co will want rid of it via the easier/quickest method. Just make sure you tot up any damage as you should have it back same condition e.g. frame chipped - respray, forks a bit notchy - full service etc, etc
