I'm hopeless in all things IT. Anyone recommend me a good value external hard drive? Just need to back up stuff from my Mac - mainly work stuff on Word and some holiday pics. Ta v much.
Seagate 1TB usb 3.0 drive for about £45. Light, robust and been fine for me for the last year.
ajantom - useful info, thanks for this.
I've got a Western Digital 1TB Passport Ultra that's been faultless. Also usb 3.0 and I've got it partitioned so 500GB is used for my mac time machine backups and the other half is for general storage. 5 year warranty, they run £40-£50.
Be careful if you buy one that encrypts your date on the hard drive, if the hard drive dies because the interface on it dies it can be impossible to recover your data even if the actual disk itself is OK.
I use Western Digital at home and work - never had a problem.
I use a Samsung M3 1tb (cost about £50) for Time Machine also have various free Google Drive storage for docs and photos too which I update manually. Need to cover the house fire scenario where computer and external drive both get fried. Contacts etc in iCloud
I have a Western Digital hard drive in my computer (Mac Mini) and it's been great
I had a Samsung 1TB portable job, knocked off a desk once and it died the death. No hd is going to like being dropped but I wasn't impressed by how fragile it was.
Currently using Seagate 2TB (£60ish) and so far so good, cheap, fast and quiet.
Another vote for the Western digital Passport-good & simple & portable storage at a reasonable price
