I popped some new jockey wheels in my rear mech the other day but appear to have stripped the threads in the mounting plate when I did it. Bums...

There are 2 plates, one that comes away completely when the bolts are undone and one that's attached to the mech body. Is the one attached to the mech body that's threaded. Is it new mech time or can it be salvaged? It's an XT mech and it looks as though the plate isn't removable ๐Ÿ™

The hole the bolt goes into goes right through the plate, so if I could find a long enough bolt and thin enough nut I think I could fasten it up but I've no idea where to start...

If I were you i'd buy another one. Only because the damage it 'could' cause by bodging it up and then only for your good work to be undone and wrap itself around my spokes and bending the mech hanger into oblivion!

A tenner for a 2nd hand mech..... I know my choice!

You will be able to replace the cage, although you'll probably have to buy a donor derailleur as I don't believe that Shimano do spares.

Before that, I'd try running a thread tap through the mess and see if that cleans it enough to make it workable.

You could buy a countersunk bolt from eBay and put a nylock nut on the end, trimming any excess once the nut is fastened.

You don't really want any nuts on the inside of the cage, so why not buy an extra long bolt of the correct thread, saw off the head (so you're left with just a threaded stud), two-part epoxy that into the inner plate, and have a nut securing the outer plate onto your threaded stud?

If you can get hold of one, the XTR version of the bolt has an additional circlip too, as an extra precaution.

TBH though, why not get a stainless bolt, grind to a flattened dome shape, put flats on the sides and then use through from the opposite side, putting a nylock nut on?

Cheers for the comments. I've discovered an old XT mech in my parts box so have swapped my nice new-ish bling one for the not so sexy old one.

I'm pretty sure it's fatal ๐Ÿ™ although I still think if I could find a bolt that was 4mm longer and a thin nut, I could use a generous amount of threadlock to patch it together...

You can use the old cage on the new mech - there's a grub screw on the part of the body that the cage mounts to. If you undo it the original cage will pop out and you can slide the new one in, being careful to connect it with the spring.

(I'm running my deore with an xt cage after a bit of a bend)

They are all Saint bits not XT.

If you want to find spares for your mech find the model number off the back of it FD-M7 something. Put this number into google followed by EV. This will find the exploded view which will list the spares. Take the spare part number. Petra should be able to supply if Madison import it.
